What do you think is the most powerful Imperial Gaurd army? From an Infantry Company, Tank Company, Mechinised Company, or Arttilery Battery?
If I had to pick any one on the your list, I'd have to go with the mechanized infantry, for the best over all choice.
Just check out the history of the Wermacht Panzergrenadiers in WWII. These were some bad to the bone dudes!
With the right combo of fast mechanized troops backed up with some armor, these were and will always remain some of the best fighting groups in the world.
History is full of fast armored troops, from Hannibals elephants, Rome's cavalry, Egypts chariots. Man, the list is endless.
"Every day above ground is a good day"
Hey Doc, you are forgetting one key ingredient that WITH OUT, the Wermacht was toast......air support. Once the Germans lost the airsuport that killed things infornt of the panzer divs and the troops, they had lost half their muscle!
Just a little history lesson...
You're right about air support being a key factor but the role of the Lufwaffe was not to destroy things in front of the land troops but to hold off Allied air forces who had air superiority. The German tanks were much better than the Allied ones. It was the Allied air forces that were the problem...
Just a minor correction, but you were right though...
Ok, guys I agree with both of you, but, how many 40K games have you played with air support? I've played roughly a dozen, and I've been the only one with the aircraft. And when I did show up with my flyin shooty things, some of the other players called foul.
Its not like the rules are hard, what roughly two pages? But people seem to really get upset when you bring out your fighter/bombers.
I have recently fallen in with an older group, that fourtaintely has no problems with aircraft, so I get to use them occassonaly, and I love them.
I know about air support, I spent 20 years active duty military, and I've talked to luftwaffe, american, french, canadian, and even japanese pilots.
But we are discussing a game where the average player wants either bigger guns or bigger tanks, not aircraft.
Sorry for ranting, but I got tired of "No fair" just because I was intelligent to provide close air support for my troops.
I think that a Mechanised Infantry approach is best. This is because your troops are less susceptable to fire as they move into position, and you also have the tanks and transports to use afterwards.
I would just like to point out that there is no Imperial Navy army in WH40K, and you can still take aircraft in the Heavy Support Sections of your army.
In real life warfare air superiority is generally regarded as being essential to a swift and succuessful miltary campaign. Is this the same in 40k?
Has any one used aircraft? How were they beneficial or not?
I don't know about you guys but i just like a standard infantry company with a few tanks supporting them....and basilisks...but mechanized infantry is also good
i think infantry is and always will be the best, they have 1 major advantage...numbers overwhelm the bastards!
bout four years back i played a dude who used liked 4 thunderhawk gunships in his ultramarine army....
