On the same battlefield?
I'm not talking in large scale fights, moreover smaller scale.
In gaming terms I'm positive it could be, but I'm thinking more in fluff.
For example, using a standard FOC and a Dark Angels Army.
HQ's - Captain and Chaplain
Elites - 3 Dreads
Troops - 6 Tactical Squads
Fast Attack - 2 Assault Squads
Heavy Support - 2 Devastator squads.
I still have space for another fast attack and another heavy support. In the unlikely event of an entire company of marines not being able to deal with whatever is in their way, would they draw squads from other companies or just deploy another full company with them?
i.e all my army is 3rd company, could I draw an extra Fast Attack and Heavy Support squad from the 4th or 5th companies? Or even 8th and 9th reserve company?
Fluff wise, I mean.
I can't say I've seen it all but I live for the things that keep me hollow.
Of course there can.
You can write it as the Assault unit of your 3rd Company took heavy losses during its last mission and was forced to pull from the reserve companies.
Or, maybe one company specializes in a way that complements another, so they work together often.
Or its just a really large battle.
There are all kinds of reasons to come up with. It's just a matter of doing so.
Yea they would totally work together to get the job done. Especially DA armies. You can mix DA companies with Deathwing, and Ravenwing all together. Throw in a Ravenwing fast attack unit in there.
Certainly DA are a famous example, DA (as I see it) form 'Battlegroup' formations based roughly arround a Battle company, but with units from other companies added in a similar way to the current British Army method of attaching various components to a Regiment and sending it off.
If a force was deployed to a densely forrested planet then more Tactical Marines might be added, a savannah planet more Bikers etc.
Furthermore some Chapters have different Company sizes, Space Wolves/Crimson Fists for example.
As for more than 1 company on a Planet, well it would be rare. But I have reliable fluff sources for DA launching 3 Company attacks, that would be a sight to see. I doubt they would have used 3 Battle Companies, so it was probably a pair of BC's with enough reserves added to add 100 SM.

Every time you read this sig: a fairie dies!
Even in fluff it may be rare but has happened on numerous occasions, Armageddon, Ultramar, to name just 2 famous conflicts. what you have there is just a single company, you want another fast attack I'd go with a bike squad. It's surprising what even a small unit of bikes can achieve on the table. They are fast, so can contest an objective at the last moment sometimes, it's a tactic that has won me more than one game. (admittedly I was allied to other armies, vanillas suffer on their own) but we did beat Necrons like that. And my bikes were key in the victory, I was with old BA at the time. Before new 'dex came out.
