Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hi, new here!
Guard have always been my fave army and have recently been thinking about getting back into them. This got me thinking.
Is it possible to make a Fast Attack/Assult orientated guard army?
Few units of Rough Riders
Couple of units of Orygans
Deep striking Vets and Storm Troopers
Units of 50 Conscripts with a Commisar
and a few Chimeras filled with Vets/Strom Troopers/Orygans
As well as Guard firebase, two lines of units covering each other in fire/assult, maybe a Basilisk/Russ or two weakening the enemy line ready for the assult.
You could have you 50 Conscripts ambling happily towards one of the enemys flanks, perhaps with a smaller unit of something infront of them blocking to many deaths in the Conscript unit, or perhaps a unit of Vets behind the conscripts with troop orientated wepons.
Send your Rough Riders (how about 3 units of 10!!! Bretonians!!!!) up the other flank, Deep Strike in some Storm Troopers or Vets in behind lines on the same flank to cover fire/weaken/break up this side of the flank with them.
Have Chimeras carrying Strom Troopers/Vets or pref 6 Orygans to help the Rough Riders chew through this flank while the Conscripts hold/chew through the other flank.
Have your main firebase do what you want, advance up the centre while the conscripts and assulting units chew through each flank perhaps, or do nothing so if your assulting troops die you still have 50+ troops to play with.
I've just gotten back into the game so please excuse me if im talking rubbish lol!!
Its just a darft idea, but is it at all possible?
It's a totally rubbish idea, and will never work.
Which is why it is absolutely FANTASTIC!
Things that don't work always lead to a fun game, and that's what it's all about, right? I have a shooty Ork army. It's fantastic fun to use!
I was thinking of an assaulty guard force myself. granted that my plan was 3 platoons of 55 men with warrior weapons....
Awesome. Awesome to the max.
Without spoiling things much, no it ain't possible sadly. At least not in the numbers you're thinking of. Storm Troopers, Veterans, and Ogryns are all Elite choices so you can get one of each.
And these are restricted units meaning you'll have to devote a Doctrine choice to get one of each.
One way I think is to get these as your doctrines:
Grenadiers (Storm Troopers as troops)
This'll leave you with 3 of Ogryns/Veterans and 3 Storm Troopers as Troops. Then you can get them all Chimeras if you wish. The Grenadiers can't Deep Strike or Infiltrate anyways.
I suggest grabbing the IG Codex, it'll explain a lot of these crazy things. You can't get a Commissar to join that Conscript Platoon of yours without taking another Doctrine called "Independent Commissars" since you'll be plonking them all into the Command Squads.
It seems interesting though.
Ah, never mind, thanks for the clearing up of that Marwynn.
I'll have to get myself a codex as you say. I'm happy sitting back and shooting anyway  ...although some Rough Rider might be fun, hehehe :shifty:
The problem with assault oriented guard units is that, for what they cost, they aren't particularly outstanding at what they do. They are very fragile until they get into assault, and even then when they are where they are supposed to be, still aren't much good against anything other than the remnants of marine squads, other guard, or tau. Rough riders are probably the pick of the bunch considering they have an advantage to their movement and the awesome hunting lances... but unfortunately they are one trick ponies.
Lately I have been toying with tooled out command squads, just for fun mind you and even then only two, and then plonking additional commissars and priests in mounted grenadier squads. They aren't bad units, especially when you have a 10 man grenadier squad with vet sarge and power weapon along with a commissar and power fist and priest with eviscerator. But they cost an insane amount of points for what they do. The kitted grenadier squad, with transport and attached advisors comes in around the 340pt mark for example. Command squads come in between the 200 - 300 pt mark depending on whether or not you use a transport. Here's how I take my two command squads:
Senior Officer: Bolt Pistol + Power Weapon
3x Guardsman: LasPistol + CCW
1x Guardsman: Flamer
Commissar: Powerfist + Laspistol
Platoon Command (close order drill)
Junior Officer: Honorifica + Power Weapon + LasPistol
4x Guardsman: Laspistol + CCW
Commisar: Power Weapon + Bolt Pistol
The reason I give the platoon command attached commissar a power weapon instead of a power fist is that, combined with a charge and close order drill, this squad will have 9 initiative 5 power weapon attacks that re-roll to hit. Obviously wounding is still not easy but if the dice gods are smiling on you, it can be quite funny to see marine squads fall before mere guardsman. Still, I'd never use these units in anything other than fun battles but, I guess thats what playing the game is all about.
What Guardsmen dont want to hear...
"Ok boys, time to fix bayonets!"
Another thing to try, (I really don't know if this would work at all, its just an idea) is some sentinels. I think you can get them a couple upgrades that increases their combat skills, and since they have armour, some enemies wouldn't even be able to hurt them (eg. assaulting some grenadeless Tau, or Guardsmen would be fun, because there would be no way for them to hit back.)
I play my 40k with friendly fire.
Finally fixed the link!
