If your Assault Squad sergeant has a Power Fist would you give him a plasma pistol or bolt pistol?

Bolt Pistol, no point to risk frying your powerfist, save the PP's for regular assault arines.

I don't like saying stuff like this often, but I think the plasma pistol on the aspiring champion is a real noob choice.
Bolt pistol all the way. Assault squads are made for chopping not shooting anyway.

I would go with the bolt pistol, but not because of the overheat issue. If your putting the PP on the sergeant then you've more than likely already paid for the 2 PP that the squad can get for cheaper as upgrades. That'll then give you 3 PP shots in the squad. I tried this several times and ended up killing all the models in charge range more often than not. So it ends up being a waste of points because you have to choose to not shoot in order to guarantee that you can get into assault..

I'm inclined to agree. The odds of any given marine killing itself with a plasma pistol in a shot (and let's face it, assault marines aren't taking very many shots--one or two, really) are only one to seventeen, so I'm inclined to dismiss the danger to your sargeant as negligible. However, you're paying ten points for an upgrade that you can already get in the squad, twice, for five points a pop--on models to whom the already marginal danger is far, far less meaningful.
Paying ten points for the third plasma pistol shot seems wasteful, to me. It's only five more points to mastercraft that Sargeant's power-fist, and the mastercrafting will generate far better results (it's basically an extra attack every round). There are just too many better expenditures of points in basically every list I've written than giving a plasma pistol to an assault sargeant.

__points for a weapon that will hit on 3+ wound on 2+ and not allow a save can easily make its points back. Also normally people would just roll all 3 PPs together and allocate any 1s to a normal trooper. - Don't share points, please. - Firedrake28

There's no good reason to take a plasma pistol on the Sergeant.
a) It costs more than it would on a normal squad member
b) It hurts a lot more to lose the model to overheating
c) If the model is taken out (Mind War, Vindicare Assassin, unlucky range/LOS) then the unit is crippled against the toughest opponents (Dreadnoughts, Wraithlords, etc.) and loses a good chunk of its shooting effectiveness, too.
