hi guys ive decided to start a ig army wat do u think i should start off with?
i like the idea of drop troops
Try capitalizing and also try to be more specific.
Ok, for the imperial guard you should start off with the battle box and one more box of troops and another if you want to make a weak Hq. If not try to get other boxes to make some conversions. Make sure you base your army on what you like. For example what colors and your style of play....
Like Toon said, a battle box or 2 is a really great start on things. If your looking for drop troops then focus more on plasma/melta guns and less on heavy weapons (not saying dont take any but not as many). All drop troop army is very tricky to play. Have you played Imperial Guard before? Just my 2 cents but you may want to start out with static gun line guard and work your way into drop troops. Just so you get a good idea on how they work. Good luck brother!
PS: Here is a really good article on how to play drop troops http://www.librarium-online.com/foru...op-troops.html

In the rule book, on page 5, it says:
"The most important rule about playing games of Warhammer 40K is to have fun!"
Two cadian battleforces and the box with 10 guardsmen and a chimera and a box of 20 cadian shock troops.
That'll easily give you 2 Leman Russes, 1 Chimera, bits to convert officers from the standard guardsmen(using the tank commander head, sergeant chainsword arms etc.) 6 heavy weapon plaforms and about 45 guardsmen.
This way you'll have two troops, one 35 man infantry platoon and one armoured fist squad, a HQ of a command squad that you can easily expand as you play a few games and grow fond of different weapons and setups and two of the nastier tanks in the game.
It highly depends on what you want to play. If you want to use drop troops, you'll propbably want to stick to a lot of infantry. Hardend Vets are a great choice for a Drop Troops. 3 Special weapons Deep Striking can really hurt. Think three Meltas on BS4 landing behind some tank! There are probably people that say "you might as well infiltrate them" but that often leaves them on positions that are decent but not as great as a good Deep Strike would offer.
I would keep it infantry-based. Maybe back it up with a Bassie or two since they are cheap and really pack a punch.
