i was just looking through the rumours section, when i came across the dark angels rumours. it said something about the deathwing terminator squads being changed. the new squads will have a max of one heavy weapon, and will be able to mix closecombat and shooty weapons. do you think these squads will be effective? would you use them if you could?
I'd rather have the "tactical" terminators with two assault cannons.
Okay. Here we go, rumour moguling for DA instead of Eldar. Joy.
I am of the opinion that this new Codex is a vast improvement and everything they do is for the better apart from the lack of vet skills, but they are JUST RUMORS.
Do you often take more than 5 Termies in DA?
If not (as I thought), this means you pay for 10 Termies to make 5. Simple:
Termie Box set costs $65AU. It comes with 1 Flamer, 1 Cyclone, & 1 Assault Cannon. You can have 1 Assault cannon from 1 box set, but you always take 2. There are 5 Termies in a box set, yet you end up with your 5 man squad plus 5 you will never use (because there aren't any Assault Cannons in the squad).
This is a good thing, stop getting ornery about change. It is inevitable, we may as well get used to it already, hell I say it's a balance thing.
Post your army lists in the ARMY LIST section! Not that hard!
Plus one of the rumours is that the Master of the Deathwing allows you to take DW termies as troops. Two assault cannons per troops choice, even in 300pt squads, just isn't going to go down well.

Just because assault cannons are good, doesn't make terminators good. A 5 man squad of DA terminators is hardly unbalanced, in fact its just the opposite. Besides one can already do that now. Its not like Assault cannons can permeate a list very easily. Eldar could 'abuse' star cannons because their troops, heavy support, and fast attack, where all encouraged to take them.Plus one of the rumours is that the Master of the Deathwing allows you to take DW termies as troops. A death wing army can field be between 4 and 5 squads at 1500. That would be a maximum of 8 assault cannons - while good thats nothing stealer. Old eldar could field 10 starcannons in 1000 point games.Thats why there are bits retailers, or just order the metal version for the land speeder.Do you often take more than 5 Termies in DA?
I like it, it means variety, and variety really is the spice of life in this game.
And a five man squad with 3 lightning claws, 1 thunderhammer and an assault cannon would be absolutely awesome. I will definitely field them in my Dark Angels army (man i've been waiting years for this codex to come out, i've got like 4k points of the little green men just sitting there begging to be fixed up).
Besides, a couple of codex's back, the Dark Angels already used to be able to do this, so I wouldn't be surprised if they bring it back.

Also, you should google "garfield minus garfield". Awesome.
Offhand, I'd probably say that Deathwing players have been slightly spoiled by having 2 Assault Cannons per squad. It's not as if capping their Assault Cannons will make them vastly less effective; it will just force you to Deep Strike more intelligently (or not at all, depending on the situation). The way I see it, the Deathwing is getting back to its roots - an elite army filled with resilient models in Terminator Armour that need to be used with the precision of a scalpel, despite the fact that they hit with the force of a sledgehammer. They take the strengths and weakness of a standard Space Marine army and multiply them threefold.
Scouts, SM's or Ravenwing do surgical strikes. Termies blaze away and destroy. Now there will be no Deathwing armies at tourniments. It will be Lysander Wing. Yeah I've heard the argument about how many Lysander wings do you actually see, well I think they will start to appear.
Terminators may be better at shooting because of the assault cannon but they are not even close to the best at close combat.
Both weapons are good and both have uses, but like many things the application of either one is not the most straightforward.
Like NiteRabbit I'm happy that more precision and thought will need to be put into the use of the deathwing arm now.

Yeah, I've seen two DE armies in 4 years. So I’m not too worried about the legendary DE wytch squads. Orks with choppa's....they make it to close combat all the time. Wait they wear velvetta for armor. 8 AC shots and 6 Storm bolters from one squad of termies will mow them down before they can say whatever it is they say. Raptors, Khorne, Banshee’s….I can believe. Khorne or a demon bomb are the only things I’d worry about. Everything else gets targeted and destroyed. Besides that, no army can win them all.
Cityfight, non-cityfight, heavy terrain, light terrain, I have never and I mean never seen anyone use a heavy flamer on a terminator…..Deathwing or not. Mind you I have only been playing for 4 years pretty much in the Pacific Northwest. If you deepstrike on a city board you can kill yourself. If you slog it you waste between 4 and 8 shot a round so that you can hopefully run in and flame someone. If you pod in you lose warm bodies. It’s just not practical. I’ve seen a few cyclones but they are generally ineffective. It is easier to get rending or kill infantry with 8 shots then do much damage with two. Everything has its uses bla bla bla bla. If you make a tournament list, you mean to tell me that you would reduce your shooting capability to add a flamer just in case you pull the city board during one of your games. I realize every weapon has it a use but for a take all comers good tactical list, that you can bring to the game store or the group or a tournie and play anyone, it’s AC’s all the way. Next thing your going to tell me is that shot guns are great assault weapons.
I don’t know what boards you are playing one but the standard deployment zone is 12”, recon mission is 15”. The standard board at my shop for a 1500 pt game is 4x4 or as I prefer 4x6. So if I deploy terminators 12” you can only be 36” from them. On city boards, depending on the mission I can start within 24” of you.
