never played assault squads without packs, but i suppose because of their lack of speed but cc abilities they would be good for counter attacks

i find they're great in small games where the jet packs might be a bit too costly and mobility isnt as importent (you'll probably be deploying close together in a small fight)

they're great with the plasma pistols and a vet seargent.

in small games (500pts) i use a 6 man squad as a body guard for my commander.

plus they get frag grenades for free.......

mind you though, plasma pistols are good, but even 3 rapid firring plasma weapons, 1 moving plasma weapon and a missle launcher only managed to put 1 wound on a very mean looking wraithlord (which subsequently left me screwd)

If your army has all of its troop spots filled and you want more troop squads, then you can take the jet packs of the Assault squad and play them as normal marines for the price of a normal marine. Thats all I think they can be good for.

Hey, in theory I love them. Havent had a chance to put it into play yet. I have a VDR rino/vindicator I plan to put a squad into. Heavy hitter with good assault/defense squad. Iffn that wont wash there is the obligatory land raider for a heavy slot. Got to put something in there right.
