So in a game the other day, I took Calgar with a 4 man Honor Guard. They all died in their first engagement without even inflicting a single wound. Granted, it was against a Blood Thirster, but it got me to wonder.
What should the be used against? An extremely point heavy, but small, unit. It's also pretty slow. The most use I got out of it was the 10 leadership, but I can get that for for 1/5th the points.
Has anyone got any suggestions of how to effectively use this unit?

Calgar is a cool guy and you can't discard him because a Bloodthirster ripped him. Unlucky turns are unfortunate, but not more than that. You should give him another go. As for the honor guard, they are expensive. I would attach it to a other squad of I was you.

It always depends on what you have them do. This unit is great against armies that come to you, or in a transport, but can't survive being shot up much and are worth a ton. You should try them again, but don't put them up against something they can't kill, I would only put Grey Knight terminators, (5 terms) with a Grand Master barebones, except for better save and some anti-demon weaponry against a Bloodthirster in close combat. I think it is probably that that is making you reconsider them, they would have killed any Chaos lord for example, but a Bloodthirster is too much. Keep them and if you aren't fighting an assault army bring them a transport and laugh as they kill everything that goes against them. They rule, just not when out of their league, think of them as a better marine captain/commander with a souped up veteran command squad.

Make him less pts-sinkey by using the normal Honour Guard to back up a Tactical squad or two, then with the freed up pts from discarding the Champion & Ancient, you can get 8 men with 2 Meltaguns and make THAT his command squad. Much meaner. Nice.
You need ablative wounds with any special character because they prance about, making everyone get 40k-penis envy, so they lsh out and kill it ASAP. With 8 spare wounds, 2 Meltaguns, 1 Champion, & Chainswords\Bolt pistols for all, there is little anyone can do to stop them once they arrive.
If you use a Raider, you should probably label it 'The Faith & The Fury' and shove him in it turn 1. Drive him up and let the games begin!
I should know, I did the same with my 'not-Clagar' Lachlan Danaan squad. It works a treat, just make sure the Raider stays a seperate unit and with it's own purpose.
Post your army lists in the ARMY LIST section! Not that hard!
Use Calgar and make a big deal about it. Then while i try and take my anger out on your stupid character with all my arsenal, destroy me while I'm distracted (let me make this clear: I HATE CALGAR!). You'll soon find that others are just like me, and will go all out to kill the Supreme Grand Master of the Smurfs
