Is the Leman Russ any good, I've read a few replies to army lists that say they're meant for anti-troop tanks, do they have any chance of taking down tanks?

Protectorate of Menoth: Grand Exemplar Kreoss
Yes, they can take down tanks. But you're still much better off by firing their guns at infantry.
... only triumph could turn pooing his pants into a good thing..
yeah better at infantry really. They can take down tanks unless the scater messes it up.Better to leave heavy weapons for anti armour duty.

still, i never leave without them....i always field three, and they always get there point value back. also, pieplate attack units are meant for troops, not Armor, because the damage gets halfed, if its not a direct hit on the tank. If you want a anti tank tank, look at the armored company list. Click Me! look under the tank hunter

They are indeed awesome.
They are nice at taking out transports, but open troops are where it really shines.

The Battle Cannon is a nifty piece of hardware. It's capable of blasting away MEQs and serves as a decent anti-tank weapon. You have the very same odds with a Lascannon as with a Battle Cannon to hit.
Then, since it's an Ordnance weapon, you roll two D6 and choose the highest result. That's a 2/3 chance of glancing or penetrating.
And if you miss the first time, of which there is a 2/3 chance in, then there's also a good chance of you hitting something else. Could very well be your own troops if you're not too careful.
The Leman Russ tanks are considered anti-troop vehicles because of their cannon and their triple Heavy Bolters with the added bonus of being an AV14 vehicle. So it can pound many infantry units to dirt with minimal risk to itself. The Battle Cannon itself has a range of 6 feet. Anything in LOS can get shot at and dang it all if that's not pretty.
To bad there aren't rules to run marines over with a leman russ in the game, would be wonderfull. Its mostly a infantry killer as said before, the demolisher is somewhat of a tank killer but is mostly used to take out big things with the better sponson options and demolisher cannon(fun taking out terminators with it)but still, heavy weapon squads,Best bet would be vets, better BS can take a heavy weapon,a little bit decenter chance of hitting.
SOme people try to make it fir both by giving it a hull lascannon as well in case the battle cannon goes which it will as I don't think anybodys that stupid to not pick it to be damaged.
