So I have this pile of Storm Bolter sisters that have accumulated from various boxed set and assault weapon blister purchases who have no home. I've already got three elites and three heavy support choices (well, if I do break down and get an exorcist) I'm happy about for big games. So unless I take a celestian squad as a retinue, there isn't anywhere to squeeze an immolator on the board. I was thinking about taking a dominion squad with 5 storm bolters and using their dedicated transport to squeeze in the immolator. It's pricey, but 10 24" bolter shots isn't totally ignorable, and I think they'd fit in really big lists. Plus a jumpy canoness could hide out in the 6th slot in there if there's no good place to deploy her and start doing her thing on turn 2.
sounds like a good plan , i myself use a dominion squad for meltas but i think having that many storm bolter would work very well!
I've read battle reports with just such units and they can work well. The trick to using them is to take full advantage of their ability to move and then fire out to medium range. You can actually shift to get a bead on enemies while staying out of their move and fire or charge range.
I would agree that they (SB Dominions) will perform better on the board than they look on paper. They fill a small role that can't quite be filled by any other SOB squad.
The mobility of the StormBolter is hard to appreciate on paper.
One of my most consistent shortcomings is not throwing enough firepower downrange on turns 1 and 2. 24" Stormbolters deployed as Fast Attack should be able to make hits on turns 1 and 2, and continue to make hits on all 6 Turns. That can amount to a lot of Dakka.
The SB Dominions also have the option to add Divine Guidance onto the Storm Bolters if an opportunity should present itself.
On the "Con" side, a Dominion with a SB is only 6 points less than a Grey Knight!
He is far superior. We all know that. (And we didn't even "pay" for faith yet).
But I wouldn't just tell you to get GKs. You have to look at his defensive capabilities.
When a GK squad takes casualties, the first 4 GKs who fall cost you 100 points.
When Dominions take casualties, the first 4 Dominions cost you 44 points.
From this perspective, you could say that the sisters are twice as easy to defend in a shootout. Once again, that is the role that I find my SOB armies lacking in.
So the Dominions actually fit the shootout role better, by being better able to defend.
The point is to consider what you will need on the battlefield.
