Don't know about the LOS rule.
I would just try to crash into them. That works about 3/4's of the time for me against tau. I play BTs. But when this tactic fails, it really fails.
<(^^)> <(^^<) (>^^)> ^(^^)^ Dance Kirby! Dance!
Per our outrider at the store we play at, any troop that covers more than half of the model behind it is considered to block LOS. Also, because they are just troops in terminator armor, and not vehicles like a dreadnaught, this is why the suits fall into that category. Sorry!
As for defeating the Tau, I'd suggest taking more jump pack troops and some termies. Deep strike the termies into their lines, and use the jump pack troops to rush forward. I really don't understand how you're having difficulties, the rail gun only fires one shot a turn, unless you buddy has 3 but even then.... 3 insta-deaths isn't that bad.
Mooing peacefully since 1996!

i guess al you can do is use cover to get up ther. try deep striking, if you can live that long 8| use rhinos, althought your first turn is the most important dont get rush to farr up if you are with out coer and cant get in assaults range. Try making bigger squads 2 dead and you have to make moral checks.
Your friend is right, the Suits CAN be screened by Fire Warriors.
I used to play Tau and now I play Black Temps. I find that with the Tau, you know there will be a few Braodsides around and maybe a Hammerhead. Trick is to give him TOO many targets to choose from. Also, GET IN FAST. Overload him with Rhinos and or crusaders/landraiders. I find that the deepstrike is not always reliable as you never know if you will get your guys to DS. What happens if you never role the right number? So dont rely on the DS to be your only source of action.
Also, use whirlwinds. keep them out of LOS and keep hitting his troops, while moving your boys fwd. If you use MArines that can take Devies, well, go after the the broadsides and Hammerheads with Lascannons so that they wont kill your Rhinos that are carring your troops. Once you get in his lines....its all over. Especially if you are using CC marines! woo hoo! Just pray you go first. Maybe the Emperor will hear your prayers and allow you the higer die role!!! If this happens, your chances are greater. Again, give him many targerts to choose from, so even if he does kill something good, you have alotta other "good" stuff to hit him with. Try to "strong" a side and overwhelm him with stuff as metioned above. Hope this helps.
You've got a pile of S10 AP1 72" ranged weapons staring across the board at you. Why do you deploy so that after set up you "Roll to see who wins the game?" Sure, you take other sorts of risks by flanking, rolling through cover etc. (longer to get into assault, pro'lly), but c'mon, at least the game doesn't come down to a single roll. Sigh. BA... they can't help themselves I guess.
Ba works for me vs tau but hey maybe im just lucky i dunno
Its quite easy if you ask me, either get thier quick or use the cover. I mean they are just little blue guys with guns. My Fists outshoot them everytime, and thats saying something.
Along with Eldar, I have yet to loose a Battle vs Tau(11 Eldar Battles, 7 Tau).
And I play Ultramarines.
My main Tactic to fighting the Scourge of the Ultima Segmentum (The Tau) is exactly what has been mentioned in this forum. However this is more precisily what I do.
Ok 1st off, if im going HtH which it more than often leads too, fcuk having a Gun battle. I purchase a Land Raider and 2 or more Rhinos. A) The most important HtH group goes directly behind the Raider in Deployment (commonly HQ) thus blocking forward LOS of those G A Y Rail Guns. Your more expendable HtH squads then pile into other Rhino's flanking your designated HtH Rhino. Now on the advance keep this formation and your Raider with its more Superior Armour and Weaponry should act as a SpearHead and a MeatShield at the same time. Once close enough the Raider Tank Shocks, giving the Rhino's time to deploy there lethal cargo. OPTIONS: Also include Bikes, and Speeders. Most Tau players belive a Speeder is an insignificant target, until there Fire Warriors actually go on FIRE!!
Anyway a Mobile Army is always the key vs you regular Gun Heavy Fat ***** Armies i.e. Tau and Imperial Guard. Ideal Armies suited to this task are you guessed it White Scars followed by the D.A Ravenwing (which i also play) and dont underestimate your supercharged engines on your Blood Angel Rhino's.
Plus there is nothing scarier that the B.A in HtH, Tau players know this. Use it against them.
Hope it Helps
Ultramarines 1st Company
Yo, I'm a Tau player and I play BA....
I don't know what kinda Tau players you guys have faced to get so cocky, but it seems Tau just don't know how to play space marines. To give you an idea when I play BA I take my troop choices and then load up Crisis suits, forget about Broadsides, hammerheads with Ion Cannons are the perfect Sm killing machines. I hate assault troops so the more of them you have the better off your are in my opinion, get up the board fast. I've had several games with people that just take there time and try to be tactical, well Tau die in assault like you step on ants in the park. You'll also need some support though to take out the big stuff tanks and if they have broadsides termies get torn up like anything else by railguns some why not just take devastaters or a dreadnought up to you. Have fun losing for the greater good
