i have quite a large (3000) space marine army and was thinking about having a crack at demon hunters.
i know alot of the things i have now are intercahngable ( dred / rhino ect)
what would you guys recomend for a space marine based demon hunter army ?
What would you want to be using from your space marine force?
Greyknights have the c/c ability that the space marines dont have, so maybe used for that purpose?
Well, you basicly won't be able to use grey knights, (I'm assuming you have the DH codex right? If not, you should probably get it.) so you'll need an inquisitor lord and atleast 2 squads of Inquisitorial storm troopers. The ranged inquisitor lord set up is probably the best for your points and it will help if you need heavy weapons since you can only have one devestator squad. This is about the set up:
Inquisitor lord with psycannon
3 gun servitors with 3 heavy bolters or 2 h bolters and a plasma cannon
I don't have any experience though with how DH actually work in combat and what would benefit you other than the necesities and such so I'll leave that to others.

Are you looking to make a base Space Marines army with allied Daemonhunters?
Or are you looking to build a Daemonhunters army, at least starting out by taking advantage of your existing Space Marines to bulk it out?
In the former case, you should take whatever you feel like. A shooty inquisitor lord is about the most cost-efficient fire support squad in the game, and unlocks assassins, which can be fun. A unit of GKTs is, generally speaking, a bit more effective at assaults than space marine termies, and they're definitely cooler looking. GKs work great as either footslogging troops or deep-striking assault units. Even allied ISTs could be useful, especially if you're looking for a cheap way to get a nifty chimera or doubled-up special weapons (melta guns, plasma guns) in a single squad.
In the latter case, the use of Grey Knights are completely prohibited, so you'll definitely have to get an inquisitor lord. I'd strongly recommend you build him shooty, not for assaults. You'll also have to get two squads of ISTs. I'd recommend at least one with meltas in a rhino, and the 2nd I'd probably make more shooty with plasma and a chimera. After that, add in assassins if you have the points for it, and throw in your marines to bulk out the armour and assault capabilities of the force. Daemonhosts can also be fun, if you're looking to play radical.

ninjabackhand: point and click, again, really? even after i give you an military term "shock tactic" you still call it point and click.

Yes, you can. ANd it's worth noting that you fit A LOT of GK in just a few slots, so taking a base SM army and adding GK still leaves you a lot of flexibility. You can't take DH heavies, but there's nothing you'd want to take except the orbital strike. You can still take LRs and LRCs.
