Hello, I have been playing a Chaos Space Marine army for probably five months now and I am thinking of starting an Imperial Guard army. I am eventually going to do Dark Eldar, but I am thinking it might be better to wait for the update. At any rate, I just have a few questions regarding the effectiveness of the army and the play style.
First, is IG basically a shooty army? Do they sit on the back lines and just use sheer numbers of troops to overwhelm the enemy? I see most armies geared up to kill MEQs, so it seems that a horde IG army would pretty much destroy any other list just due to the sheer number of wounds and heavy weapons they can take.
Also, how effective are IG in tournaments? I'm a very competitive person and I would like to play a very competitive army. I really can see them doing well against every opponent, but I have no real experience with them. Does this sort of "horde" IG list have any weaknesses? Fast CC units perhaps?
Lastly, how customizable are they in terms of army composition? Does everyone pretty much play the same list or can you do neat stuff and focus on one element, like Fast Attack? And one last thing... are they a pain to assemble and paint? Since I am interested in doing horde IG I am really not looking forward to painting that many models...
At any rate, thanks much!
Well they work the best in this role with many squads with heavy weapons and plasma weaponsFirst, is IG basically a shooty army?
but there is also a lot of room in the codex to make your own army different to any other guard army out there. A lot of players like to play elite guard armys with max out veteran squads and
storm troops as troops. Maybe you would like a tank heavy force? Well with hellhounds as fast attack, mech troop squads and leman russ battle tanks you can play a army close to a full armoured company.
You can even play a kind of airborne force with most of your army deep striking in. Oh and theres all the stuff from forge world you can play around with, around 50+ vehicles alone with artillery and other stuff. The guard have endless possibilities for any general who wish to fight in the name of the emperor.I don't play in these myself but from what other players have told me is that they do fairly well. Also, how effective are IG in tournaments?
Drop troop armys tend to do the best with many squads deep striking and raining death down on the enemy.VeryLastly, how customizable are they in terms of army composition?
We have many doctrines that you can use to make your army with alone with the choice to take a Alternate organisation which lets you taylor your army to your particular taste. As i already said above you can make a drop troop army, a mecanised army or maybe a jungle fighters army. Theres nothing you can't do!
Oh and welcome to the guard!
"Hey sarge, this lasgun is heavy. I wish we had something lighter."
FF7: ABOUT RANDOM BATTLES
I'm no IG player, but I have the codex and have studied up a lot about them, plus I've frequented these forums (which is rather obvious..) so I'll do what I can to help. =)
Hope this helps. =)
Are guardsmen competative? Yes and no...they really cant be powergamed like a chaos or marine or feral ork army can but in a general setting they can fair well. Hobby wise it is a tough nut to crack alot of model..though relatively easy to paint. I suggest investing time into researching techniques to paint guardsmen more resonably (i.e. use spreay color for your armor or cloth, inking them, drybrushing, etc.) As mentioned above they can be an extremely customizable force. Probaly the 3 better builds would be as mentioned the shit and shoot gun line army, the tank army, and the drop troop army. And no a horde army wilkl not "destroy any other list". Guard is a relatively harder army to play and isnt as forgiving as a marine army. Winnign wtih the guard takes brains.
Joe Peshi (lone wolf) kill tally:Lash Sorcerer, Ghazkull, Yriel, Termi Libby, Vulkan.
And a Basilisk!
The Guard aren't as easy to win with as with a Marine army. Less saves will be made and Ld suddenly becomes really important, and oh you have some of the best tanks in the game.
We shoot a lot, though we have some decent options in doing so. And sometimes our CC abilities can be a surprise. Mainly this is restricted to Rough Riders with their Hunting Lances and Conscripts, both for different purposes.
Also our army lists can be quite different from each other. You can see Mechanized lists with lots of Chimeras and Elite forces, lotsa tanks in another list, a pure infantry drop troop list, some Light Infantry infiltrators, and so on and so forth.
It's a lot more variable than even the Space Marines' Traits.
IG are very shooty, thats what there good at the most anyway, and dont expect to win many assaults,IG suck in cc and maybe the regular HQ squad may stand a small chance as with rough riders as well.
As far as effectiveness goes they can be effective, just depends on how you use them, what you got, what you got left, and who your useing them on.
You can customize them anyway you want. By useing doctrines (Mind you some are best not used at all and some that should be scrapped from the codex) and different set ups they offer. As far as doctrines go, Iron discipline, close order drill, veterans, drop troops, die hards, light infantry, chem-inhalers (Varies around here, were I play people use them in almost every army). Assembleing them is easy, painting gets hard, I would say after every unit you buy paint it, paint about 5 men a day if you can.
Also, I do not know if this is agaisnt the rules(for the forum url to be posted) , but I know of a forum that is completely IG, called bootcamp, Its number one in the warvault standings or if you cant find it but still interested I could pm it to you too look the forum over, pretty useful stuff there I've found.
