Hey all, just was pondering about one of the heavy choices for the space wolves, the leman russ exterminator. I just got the old model from a friend and fixed it up. I was wondering does any space wolf player use this mass hunk of weaponry in battle? For 213 it seems a little expensive but i've heard it packs a punch, any one know some tactics, or if its even worth it? Thanks!
I love it...my most formidible foe is orcs and it chews them right up and has the armor last most of the game. If you are playing against mostly MEQs I don't think it is worth it, but against anything else it will put models down in a hurry.
It's not the basic or Demolisher variant, it's the Exterminator Variant.
Space Wolves (their Primarch named Leman Russ) can make use of 0-1 of the Exterminator Pattern Leman Russ Battle tank... I have no Idea of what it's got though.
Post your army lists in the ARMY LIST section! Not that hard!
Yeah I play SWs and even have an Exterminator... I'll tell you about them. They're fun and unique, but I'm not sure that they are worth their cost. Specifics:
So, is twin-linking the AC, adding 1 HB, and improving the front and side armor by 1 worth 85 points worth it? I'm not sure, because for the cost of the Exterminator you could have a Destructor and a Land Speeder Tornado. As good as the Exterminator is at mowing down low armor troops, the Destructor+Tornado are better, I think.

Its good for thinning out horde armies as it can pretty much fire everything on the move. The space wolf codex is easy to come by, so you can take a look configuring it yourself. I'd add a pindle storm bolter and give it some more shooting and another weapon to blow off
40K-Beakies(9-14-4),Guard(4-7-2),Orks(34-12-11). FANTASY-Dwarves(15-6-7),Beasts (14-14-1), Skaven (17-17-10) DoC (6-1-2). CYGNAR (28-15-1)
I'd have to go with sharkball here, the exterminator is overpriced for what is does. there are better ways to kill piles of orks and such in the marine codex.
Take life seriously, its lethal.
Well as a Swolf player myself as well as the proud owner of a converted exterminator I've got to say that though expensive, the russ is a fairly decent machine of death. I mean for about 200 points you've got yourself a resillient piece of wotk that can lay down 9 heavy bolter shots a a twin-linked autocannon busrt. All that with the lovely Swolf BS you can rip through most infantry based armies. On the whole against MEQ they won't do so well, but crank one out against pretty much anything with a 4+ save and you can expect to see whole squads go down.
However, the tank is also a huge fire magnet and unless you have some other armour rolling around, you can expect it to be blown away fairly early on. This has led me to replace the rolling death with a pair of tornados and another handful of blood claws. While they won't lay down the unified hurt the russ can, together than can more than make up for it.
I generally use the Russ in my 2000 point games (not that I play many)

I find Whirlwinds much more effective for space wolves. However, if your planning on taking an Mechanized army, that is one with lots of tank, and transports, then this is a great tank to use.
Keep the tank cheep, give it all HBs, and extra armor, nothing else.
