    whats the best IG varient?

im thinking I might go for imperial gaurd and as my next army and im trying to learn as much about them as possible. the choices are:

    Vostroyan Firstborn

    Tallarn Desert Raiders

    Catachan Jungle fighters

    Cadian shock troops

    Armageddon steel legion

    Armoured company

I'm currently leaning towards an armoured company but I just wanted everyones opinion before I got started in case it changed my mind. Also, please tell me why an army is good or bad not just that it is.

Heh, sorry to hijack, but I'm thinking about starting an IG army too, up to 1000 points tho. I want to plan smart and buy what I need. Instead of getting side-tracked. I like some tanks.

I'll keep watching this one. Thanks dude I was gonna start one maybe tomorrow. lol.

ok, armoured company from what i know costs lots of money for tanks and lots of conversion time to get some of the tanks(unless from forgeworld of course), they can be pretty good though.
As far as the other armies go, what do you want to know? Fluff wise, model wise? Game wise?

Vostryans-Model wise there metal so not much conversion ability if at all. There new, got some attention model and fluff wise.
Tallarns-metal, forgeworld as well. Hit and run tactics.

Catachans are plastic as well as cadians, these are the two that you can be able to switch bits alot and still make something look good. Catachans are good with jungle fighting, cadians are basic guard really. Nothing special.

The other one is metal as well, and I think just got stopped as far as reproduceing goes.

You can use each of these armies models and use them as a vanilla IG force. Make it your own so to speak. Just depends on what you want. Assaulty, shooty, mobile, both, drop troops, elite army.

As far as the other guy goes, just get about two platoons worth of men(three squads each)and maybe a russ or two, a vet squad works well, not counting special and heavy weapons though. Other then that I need more info as of what you want to do.

if I do buy an armoured company it will be converted with bits from forge world, I like armies which can be converted easily so plastics are the go. id rather a shooting army and it doesn't need to be mobile. But basically how good are they game wise that would be of the most help. thanks

I don't know much about armoured company I'm afraid to say(and me play IG, I know, I must be joking). You listed models, they can be used to however you want them to be used, you do not have to follow there fluff, in fact you could just make your own. Game wise is you win some and you loose some. Depends on what you have in your list, what your oppnent has, and how you use them. Shooty armies load up with heavy and special weapons and sit and shoot with maybe, a counter assault unit(rough riders or HQ squads) and tanks. Each unit has a specfic job. IG can fail or succede really. You got to make a list and post it for us to critic at and watch a few games.
I hope this helps, if not just wait for a while, more will come to help you.

Cadian! They just look so darn cool in their fancy armour!

But you forgot to include Death Korps of Krieg, and Elysian Drop Troops. Even tho they are uncommon, they are still very nice looking.
I play my 40k with friendly fire.
    Finally fixed the link!

Also forgeworld. For a tank its one matter, but for a infantry army its another.

I used to own a nice army of Cadian minis, and they were pretty spiffy. Good for converting and making a tad unique.

However, if I were to buy more IG I'd have to say that Vostroyans are the ones I would pick up next time around.

Hmm. I dont think i'm going to vote on this one.

All of the above are great! Generally, when you pick an army, you will do so for the very reasons that someone else wouldn't. And vice versa! Everyone has very different tastes.

Some will play tank heavy, some will have lots of grunts, or specialised infantry, etc... And you dont have to use the miniatures as any specific army anyway, you can field your own.

P.S You forgot Necromundan 'spiders', Death Korps of Krieg, Elysians, Vahallans, Tanith first and only, Mordian Iron guard to name a few.

And thats just the good guys, not to meantion the numerous 'semi-neutrals' such as the Skitarii, and the bad guys, like renegade imperial legions, chaos cultists such as the volscani, etc...

Maybe I just managed to complicate things a little too much. Sorry.

My real advice is to go with what you think LOOKS the best. Really. From a long term point of view, you will have far more fun that way, than if you go with what you think will hit the hardest etc. Besides, almost all guard armies can be played in very similar ways.

Also, you should google "garfield minus garfield". Awesome.

hmmm... ok maybe I should shorten the choices a bit i know it screws with the poll but thats ok. Basically which is more competetive, an Armoured Company or an IG list. armoured company rules can be found HERE. If I choose IG ill choose the doctrines and what not to suit myself. thanks for all the help so far.
