So I'm beginning to build my hardened veterans squad and am completely at a loss at what I should give my sergent. I plan on having a 10 man squad with 3 plasma guns and a lascannon. Because he can select officer only items what do you think is the best way to gear him up?
I was thinking of the old space marine set up with a power weapon/plasma pistol but I'm not sure I want to risk another vet with the "gets hot" roll (especially since hell be totally bad-ass looking).
Then I thought about giving him the Honorifica and a power fist and using them as an assault squad. But it seemed like I'd be wasting the rest of the squads options. I mean why give a squad with bs4 flamers?
Another idea I was playing with was to hand him a storm bolter/plasma pistol for the ranged benefit. This is probably going to be my decision, but do you think that 2 guns is a bit over doing it?
What about carapace armor if I do end up giving him a plasma pistol?
Also what about the macharian cross? Is that any good? I mean technically they can move themselves to an even better firing position after all other infiltrators have deployed .
storm bolter and carapace armour for the sarg. the storm bolter will give you some nice long range infantry killing and the carapace armour will pretect him in combat. but dont give it to the whole squad not worth it

There is really nothing to give the Hardened Vet Sgt IMO, that is why I almost never take a SGT for my Vets. Thier use is all about the special and Heavy Weapons that they can carry via Infiltrating or Deep Striking, so Sgt equipment is generally useless IMO, unless it is a Plasma pistol in a DS squad.

It says in the rules that you MUST take a veteran sargent for your vet squads so you don't really have a choice.

FF7: ABOUT RANDOM BATTLES
I am going to go against the grain here and suggest that you give him a power fist. Normally I would consider this option too expensive, but if you are already loading 55 points worth of guns into that squad it's worth giving them some protection from CC, and don't forget, it is one of only two places guard can actually get hidden powerfists.
I would only consider this if you are having a 10 man squad for the redundancy, and if you are infiltrating or having them on the line. It can act as an excellent deterrent for mediocre close combat units that want a quick kill.
Also, if you are doing this, keep them in cover, otherwise they just get boltered to death and you say goodnight to 160pts worth of unit.
In any case, I would actually suggest you don't buy carapace for him. Remember, since 4th edition, wounds wrap around the squad, so if your models are taking different saves (ie. if they are hit by weapons AP5 or less, and 10 wounds are scored then a save is forced on sergeant directly. I know the odds of this are pretty slim when you have a 10-man squad, but once the squad gets whittled down by a few guys, massed fire will start to force saves on him, and why even bother when he isn't independent in combat anyway?
Another good option for the shooty veteran unit is a trademark item, I know it's a tad expensive, but it basically guarantees that the unit won't run away, and it's basically the only effective place you can even buy them.
Hope this helps.
Actually, I might go with Xethemez here. If you plan on actually infiltrating your vets, it may turn out that they will be in hth before many other units in your army. So even if you are using lots of plasmaguns and a lascannon, a hidden powerfist can still be a usefull way to go.
Although, personally, I might find those xx points better spent on another couple of plasmaguns elsewhere in your army.

Also, you should google "garfield minus garfield". Awesome.
I go with a power weapon some times. If its a tank/ HQ hunting squad I would give it a fist. But other ways I save it for a commissar or something. As for guns on him a storm bolter a just a cheap regular bolter works as well.
Most medals arent worth there price in pts most of the time. The only ones that I see taken are the honorifica and the medallion crimson.
sur you can put two weapons on him, but as said above, you will most likely be in hand to hand after you've infiltrated. Much better to give him a ccw of some kind.
And yeah unfortunetly to the guy that doesnt take a vet sgt, you have to take one, says a sgt and between four and nine veterans.
