does anyone use, or would even consider using the basic landspeeder? i'm talking about the __pt heavy bolter variety. I just can't see any point to it, except perhaps to capture an objective last turn...

That's what it's good for, a cheap HB that can move 12" and fire or up to 24" to grab/contest an objective. Pretty handy if you have a spare FA slot.

Instead of a basic speeder I would take an Attack bike. For some reason they just seem more survivable then the speeder and people tend to ignore them more. I have no idea why this but they do
40K-Beakies(9-14-4),Guard(4-7-2),Orks(34-12-11). FANTASY-Dwarves(15-6-7),Beasts (14-14-1), Skaven (17-17-10) DoC (6-1-2). CYGNAR (28-15-1)
Dump one 7" away from your fireline and watch the Gaunts assault it, now it's rapid fire time! although it can be killed by 'light' weapons it's still a hard kill and with 'turbo-boost' it shrugs off ML where a LS goes boom.
Every time you read this sig: a fairie dies!
I'm a big fan of Speeders, though that true basic version I couldn't see a point using unless, like everyone else has said, have 50 some odd points to spair and a FA slot. They usually do a good job of killing atleast their pointsworth of enemies. As for bikes.. I've never had them earn their keep in combat, i suppose it's just my luck with them.
[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]Spacemarines/Black Templars = 2500 Pts.
Orcs & Goblins - 1300 pts.
