I am starting a guard army woot. I am going to play cadians first off im geting a hq my two troops and a lemmen russ. I think i will have as many heavy wepons as i can get in this army. do yuo have any pics of full sized armys? like 1500-2000 pts even 1000 will be fine
I think you should start making a list toward the 500pt games. Get used to it then start adding. You will be needing moblty in a stand and shoot army. Chimeras and Sentinals are perfect. Chimeras do alot of damge. People think there metal coffins but trust me those things last. Sentinals are weak but can move and shoot and sometimes are ignored thanks to your tanks. When you get to the higher points of game play remember that to include a special weapon and heavy weapon to all the squads that get them.

wat i basically did is got one of each of the different sections, heavy, troops, elites, etc. then i played a few games and added more to wat i sought best. now i have a 1000 point army. quick easy efficient. it also all depends on your taste and wat armies you play.
Going with what makes up the main core of an army (together with an ubiquitously used choice for that army) would be good. Specifically for Imperial Guard, that would be Command Squads/Sections (HQ), Infantry Platoons/Squads (Troops) and Leman Russ(es) (Heavy Support). Essentially the three choices in which they excel (and also filling the compulsory choices). On a side note, for Space Marines, would that not be Command Squads, Tactical Squads and a Landspeeder or Rhino variant?
Furthermore, the Games Workshop official website (US only, I think) does have sample army lists for nearly all the armies (although for IG, the list is a 2000-point army - not for new players). Moreover, they also have a "What is (usually) included in a core army" kind of page, which contains a smaller army list of about 500-750 pts...most of the lists are a tad "vanilla" (lacking flavour) though...
The Canada website also has a series of articles that talk about building an IG army too...try this link...
a full 1k army, a al muffin
i have a leman russ and a nother squad to round it off
Hehe.. First off get the IG codex. if you don't have it already.
Something you shouldn't do: Don't start planning an army with a ton of guards, although most good IG armies have a decent amount of troops you should start troop light (40 or so), and then add infantry along the way. If you go out and get 80 troopers to begin with you'll hate them long before you ever have a standing army...
If you are starting from scratch, you should consider the Cadian Battleforce Boxed set (I think it's £50 or so..). Then you have 20 Cadian troopers, a Leman Russ and 3 heavyweapons (not to forget some plastic ruins ) Also get the Kraskin boxed set and two Commandsquads (you may have to get some different blisters for these.)
With this you have 1HQ, 2Troopchoices (using the "grenadier" doctrine) and 1Heavy support choice = A fieldable army within the rules (around 700 pts.)
From here you add what you think you miss/need/like, personally I really like the Cadian Pattern Sentinels and Kraskin, -commissars for Ld.
I tend to equally balance my troops and tanks.
e.g. 20 troops = a Leman Russ tank
That way you can use a clever tactic i devised where you send your tanks forward with a squad behind using it for cover whilst the other squad lays down a bit of covering fire,
but thats off topic, just do what Hastings mentioned and then build it from there and before you know it you'll have an IG army that you can be proud of!

basilisks are what my entire army focus around. i love the little bastards!
i play a Grenadier force. Also use another 4 docs to help out the army) Here is what I have...
3 grenadier squads (these guys are great, depending on who you are fighting, give them the appropiate specials). 2 grenade launchers against a soft army is a great thing!
2 LR and 1 baslisk
HQ (in the HQ i use support weapons, special weapons and heavy suport, sentinels).
1 plattoon of regular IG
and sometimes, depending on the size of the army, my Grey Knights....oh yes....they are great support.
I am also thinking of a Hell hound. With the new 24" range, it is a great asset!
