I am thinking of doing a squad of roughriders with shotguns instead of the usual lance (for fluff reasons). I have not seen anyone use this before in the clubs I play at. Has anyone used it or got an opinion on its effectiveness?
I'm not sure how effective it would be, because for the purpose of mobility they'd be exactly the same as normal foot soldiers with shotguns...
On the other hand, it gives me a very interesting idea for a conversion....*turns on Terminator 2*....
I think that this could be an interesting idea since you'd be able to assault right after pumping the bad guys full of a load of lead. However, if you play them this way you're really not playing to their main strengths (assault with a pretty mean weapon as I see it). If you're just going to keep them back and harrass an enemy unit all the time then you're ignoring the whole assault aspect entirely and would probably be better off with another squad of troopers...
If it's for fluff though, then by all means do it, I just really can't envision it being as effective as equipping them with hunting lances. I think that you could probably spend the points better elsewhere, but that's just my own opinion. I can't really speak from experience with the rough riders because I tend to take as many sentinels or hellhounds that I can get my hands on, heh.
-- Edit: Forgot a couple of words
i think it would be more effectively if you put a pair of meltaguns in the squad so you can go tank hunting
That sounds good as the Meltas are an assault weapon. If you then upgraded the Sarge to a Vet and gave him melta bombs, the squad would be an amazing tank hunter squad.
If you really had the points to spare though, you could give them all Melta bombs. (Expensive though).
Save the shotgun for hardened veterans and leave rough raider with their lance.
The idea isnt bad and cheap in point value (extra 2 point and you can shoot+assult in 1 turn) but with bs3 and ws3 and strike last if they are in cover or initiate > 3, it is sucidal and more a speed boost for your enemy than a speed bump in my opinion.
If your enemy win the cc in the charge in assult, they can sweeping advance you, kill your squard and at their turn they got their orginal movement + whatever movement they earn by win the cc, either sweeping advance or consilerdate(sp).
i have to say i agree with everyone else - though i like the idea - could kinda be like mounted riot police or something....
ANYWAY i find the main use for roughriders is as a counterattack force when armed with Hunting Lances. They are a great one-shot weapon for you IG, for when someone Deep Strikes some assault troops right next to your lines. 18"-24" charge range, 3 attacks each on the charge, S5 and ignore armor saves can wipe out anything. Especially if you use the full ten man squad. Of course, in every subsequent turn they're practically useless with 1 S3 attack each...
I have an arbites army which is completely shotgun-based. I like shotguns, they offer you a great deal more manouverability than most rapid fire weapons, and in large numbers they can dent anything, but unfortunately they only ever get given to troops who wouldn't be that great in an assault anyway.
I like your idea fluff-wise, and against an army composed of troops who are weaker than guard in assault it would be a great combination, but other than that i really can't see a use for it...
First off, I'd like to welcome Ian William Galloway to the forums. Hope you enjoy your time here, secondly as to the topic at hand. I am one of a rare breed that when it comes to the rough riders, which is when I do use them (which is very rare). I tend to instead of hunting lances, give the unit/ units lasguns. Mostly because of the way I play with them, they usually are the outriders to the people living outside of the hives on my planet. So for fluff reasons I arm them as such mainly because of the fact I like the image of carapace wearing, lasgun armed nomads riding on something akin to giant lizards.
I'll be damned before the soldiers of the Emperor are just left to rot!

If it doesn't work with the Emperor. Then it's been officially Karmooned!!!
BEWARE THE POWER OF THE LIGHT-BRIGHT!
I'm a big fan of rough riders, and love them with shotties and meltaguns. I pick meltaguns over plasma because you're going to be on the move and won't get to stand and rapidfire anyway, so taking the one shot at higher strength and added armor busting capability without the overheat factor makes the decision easy. I also like giving their vet sergent the honorifica imperialis and a power weapon to give the unit some much needed CC punch.
If you haven't already used all of your doctrines and have a few extra points I find that it's worth giving these guys carapace armor too.
