So I play a pretty sneaky Chapter ( or it can be rather ), using 2 infiltrating tact squads, 2 infiltrating devastator squads, a sniper squad and a Scout Bike squad. I was pondering adding a Veteran Squad to the list. I'd tool it up for close combat to take objectives or counter attack with 2 marines with PW and BP, and one with power claws, while everyone else had the CCW standard. I'd do a large squad, probably 10, and depending on how points went I might even do them all in termie honors for the insane number of attacks ( at 10 it'd be 3 base attack for 30, or 40 on the charge - woo hoo! )
Of course, that's not cheap. Are they worth it?
In case you're wondering what I do for HQs, since the HQs can't attach to the infiltrating, I got a Chappy on Bike and a Libby with Jetback that start back with my Whirlwind.

For the most part, a tactical squad can do just about anything a veteran squad can. The only thing a veteran squad can do that a tac squad can't is suck up 500 points all by itself.
May your aim be true, and your targets plentiful.
I think Veteran Squads are best when they are cheap and cheerful.
I've used a 6 man infiltrating squad with a meltagun, power fist and a Vet. Sgt with a power weapon in a few games and they have aquitted themselves fairly well, killing an Avatar and finishing off a Banshee Squad in one of thier better games.
They are also quite a scary thing to put down behind some cover near your opponent's lines, but cheap enough that when they eventually die (quite probable) it isn't the end of the world.
Once you start adding in lots of extras (additional traited skills, termie honours, etc etc), they really do get far to expensive to be worth while. At the end of the day, they are 'just' marines with some cool options and a veteran skill, so they will die just as quickly to plasma guns.
As for your squad, I'd definately say leave it at home.
If you want an infiltrating HQ, grab a cheap command squad (5-6 man, vet. sgt with power fist, meltas and champion if you can afford them) and give the whole lot of them infiltrate. This would probably work best with a Librarian, although a cheap Captain/Master might make a good 'super sergeant'.

Three words: Alpha level missions.
I only like infiltrate on units where it is "innate" i.e. it's part of the package. As soon as you start paying points for it you end up with certain units struggling in a third of the games you play.
Having an army and not owning a rulebook is like owning a car with no steering wheel.Originally Posted by amishcellphone
As for paying points, its a risk you run.
It gives a lot of advantages for little disadvantages, so the mission balances that out for you.
Vets are best IMO just kept as a CC tac squad. Vet sarge + PF and give 1 guy lighting claws and maybe throw a melta in there.
That with other infiltrating tac squads you have a pretty good combo IMO for relatively little cost.
so it is about 1/3 of the time. As mentioned before.
AS for Veterans - I found them a bit on the expensive side. But I am running a chapter without traits, so I need them for the infiltration every now and then. And to be effective in that set-up you need 10 of them, so that makes them even more expensive.
In your set up - I thing an Assault Squad might be the better option.
Shut up and play.
