I've more or less finished my current Tyranids army, and so I was thinking about collecting a second army. Since 'nids are a swarm army, I decided I wanted to play a small and elite army, and was directed to you lovely people.

Naturally, I have tonnes of questions. First off:

This is a picture of a really neat looking Gk army from the GW site. But I'd like to know...
a.) Is it a pure Gk army, and is it a legal one (not missing any large squads of ugly looking troops or anything is it)?
b.) How much, roughly, is it worth in points?

Secondly, are Daemonhunters primarily shooty or close combat, or an even mixture of both?

That'll do for now, I look forward to your answers

ok, what you see in the picture is the bread and butter of the Demonhunter army..they Grey Knights...

And as for shooty oR Close combat..that is the beauty of the Demonhunters I think...they can do EITHER, they are very versatile..just depending on how you set them up...

AND YES, THAT SI ROUGHLY A 1500 POINT FORCE, DEPENDING ON WHAT FROM THE ARMOURY EASH HAS

Yeah, it looks legal.

I don't know how many points though, I'd estimate maybe 1000-1500, but I didn't add them up, so who knows.

And to me, they can fill both roles fine.

I'm not very familiar with Space Marines, but am I looking at... (clockwise from the Dread)

Dreadnought (standard SM?)
Standard Gk troops
Inquisitor
Grander Inquisitor with retinue
Standard Gk troops
Standard Gk troops (all three units armed differently?)
Gk Terminators

?

Seems like quite a small army for the points cost.

Welcome. I did the same thing as far as moving from Tyranids to Ordo Malleus. Good choice, but deffintaely differnt play style. My first few matches I got destroyed. It's a big change in gears from throwing Hormagaunts at the enemy to careefully managing your troops. I like the idea of a pure force better, but it SEVERELY limits your options. As far as the picture goes, it isn't technically pure Grey Knights. When you play pure, you don't get tp take Inquisitors, Stormtroopers, or anything that requires the Inquisitor (Assasins, daemonhost, etc.). I have been fairly succesful with my army. Haven't played to many games with them yet, but I have a positive record after the first couple. First thing is they Deffinately shoot a lot better than nids. As far as i was concerned, the only real weapons we got were the Psychic skills, Biovores, and Venom Cannopns. Everything else just didn't work for the points costs imo. These guys are incredible. They may lack a little in the tank busting department, but the storm bolters are awesome. Psycannons are also impressive as long as they will beat the armor save. Now GK's ,at least when I play, don't really do all to great in meat grinder missions, but they can deffinately take objectives. Nothing more fun than Deepstriking GM, and 4 Terminators into the Necron phalanx, and watching Holocaust and FW's chew them apart. GK are not not your Bread and butter SM and that's the only reason I picked them up. They have ability that sets them apart and and the fluff is incredible. As far as point costs though, huge absolutely huge. That pic is easily between 1250-1750, depending on what the inquisitor's have on them. And the fact that every GK model is pewter? That really hurts the pocket. I still have to pick up my dread and probably some more temies. Still, fun army to put together, really poseable, lots of stuff you can do as far as painting details. All in all they are a great force, and I hope you like them.

Welcome welcome welcome!

Since they covered the first questions already, I'll just answer the last.

DH itself is a very very versatile army, as you can take allies from other Imperial services, or lend your self out to an existing SM or IG army. It can also be used pure, without any allies (there's a lot of us on this board that play pure-DH). As a pure army (as I assume you are playing), DH is very hard to play, and very limited, but at the same time, amazingly versatile. We don't get much in the way of anti-armor, or at least, nothing guranteed. Very very small number of models in a game (I'm at around 40 for a 1500 pt army). But on the other hand, our base Grey Knight marine has a S6 CC weapon and a Stormbolter. The Grand Master is one of, if not THE single most badass unit fieldable (and yes, I know every non-DH player will jump in with their opinion on this, but hey, it's my opinion! ). Orbital Strike is a nice piece of psycological terror. And a plasma cannon that walks on two legs is something most enemies aren't expecting.

As for shooty/CC, the Grey Knights can do both equally well. They all have Stormbolters, and can upgrade to Psycannons (heavy 3 that doubles as an assault 3) or Incinerators (heavy flamers that ignore Invul saves). You can even take a Purgation Squad as a heavy choice (4x psycannons).

On the other hand, every GK also comes with a S6 CC weapon. On Justicars & Termies its a power weapon, and on the GM it's a force weapon. Not bad for no extra points.

So a Pure-DH army can do incredibly well with either CC or shooting, just depends how you use the.

since all the purist grey knights have harranged you with the might of the grey knight i guess Ill give you my inducted guard speech as well so you can see how versatile they are.

I like grey knights they are the greatest elite troop yet for the forces of light but a force of all of them is to few by far with no hitting power.

I like to mix the lot to get the best potential out of their list. Inducted guard or storm troopers make wonderful meat shields for your expensive knights and inquistors. That way i have a strong fire base with good hand to hand support in the knights.

I make one of two types of armies either mass storm troopers in rhinos/chimeras with teleport homers and deep striking knights. Or I take two ig platoons with autocannons a shooty inquistor retinue with two hand to hand knight squads for back up.

Thanks everyone, this is really helpful.

As far as the picture goes, it isn't technically pure Grey Knights.Â* When you play pure, you don't get tp take Inquisitors, Stormtroopers, or anything that requires the Inquisitor (Assasins, daemonhost, etc.).
What's the alternative HQ for pure Grey Knights then? I thought it was only Inquisitors. And which guys in the picture are Stormtroopers (are Stormtroopers IG? I haven't a clue.)

I would probably play Pure Gks, since I don't have a start on any other Imperial armies. Having said that, I could get my hands on some cheap second-hand IG from a friend, but it'd be simplest just to try the Gks on their own first. I can always add to the list. The only thing that puts me off is the cost of the models, but I guess I could make up for that by painting them up very nicely. And they do look awesome.

I'll probably be back tomorrow with an army list planned.
