I'm a Witch Hunter player who is looking into using some Imperial Gaurd for fluff reasons. Now depending on the answer I get here I may take different routes.
In the Imperial Gaurd Codex it mentions that Infantry Platoon command squads are as written for the HQ choice Command Squad with the exception that it's commanded by a junior officer. Now given this, can Infantry Platoon Command Squads (Troops choice) take support squads as well? (Fire Support, Amti-tank Support, Mortar Support, Sentinel etc). I don't really know the codex too well, but I've not read anything to counter this asumption yet.
If it was beacourse of the inability of WH to take doctrines it would be no worries as an IG army without doctrines has access to all units in the Codex. But since HW-platoons are not one of the mentioned inductable units they are of limits. Unless you go the other way around that is and use an IG force as your main army and then use WHs as allies.
Andusciassus and Gandhi are right, you are SOL if you want to induct guard with heavy weapons platoons or support squads, but using them the other way around is the way to go, because in my opinion, the guard have the best heavy support, so why not sacrafice your ability to get WH heavy support, and just use all the other choices from the force organization chart ( you can't use the full compliment of the chart, but you can get enough). Its how I play my Guard with allied DH. The guard provide firepower, while the DH (Grey Knights specifically) provide the close combat skills that the guard lack. All this may just be discouraging you since it sounds like you already have a decent sized WH army, and you were just wanting to throw down some heavy weapons as support. If this is the case, all I can suggest is give the command squad, and all the infantry squads heavy weapons, and let them sit back and provide support.
Battlesuits, putting the BS in BullS*%t.
aiyiyi no no no, I'm not petty enough to grab some Imperial Gaurd just for their heavy weapon selections
I was wondering this point because the support squads sound quite cool, I guess I'll settle in for sentinle squadrons instead. I didn't want to go allied Witch Hunters because I didn't really want to spend money getting a fully operational Imperial Gaurd army. As a said it was mainly for fluff I wanted some Gaurdsmen.
Fluff was meant to be a Witch Hunter base army with odd attachents, I already some Daemon Hunters and now wanted some Gaurd. Obvivously I can't use both but the combination of Gaurd and Witch Hunters (Storm Trooper Based), or Daemon hunter and Witch Hunter (Sister Based with some Storm Troopers) give off a unique atmosphere to the force.
Anyways thanks for answering this ^^
