I was just looking through the codex dreaming of one day finishing my rough riders when i noticed something about the wording. Basically it says that each member that doesnt have a hunting lance may have etc. I re-read the hunting lances bit and it doesnt say the whole unit has to have them (well look at the special weapons!). I was just wondering if it would be legal to field a unit with only half having lances? probs not the most useful unit but adds bodies if they get shot but means you dont lose lances!
Any help would be much appreciated
I see where your coming from on the entry.
The first line says "The squadron can replace their laspistol/CCW with a hunting lance at +X points a model"
I believe that means that the whole squad has to do it. On army builder, it won't let me make a squad with half and half, it's an all or nothing type deal. So either, you have all hunting lances, or you can have things like lasguns, shotguns, special weapons, etc. It's be pretty nasty if you could roll up to an enemy squad, shoot two flamers, then assault with lances.
Which is why i miss the old rough riders.
Laspistol, CC weapon, lasgun AND a hunting lance. All on the same model. It's true.
If only they'd let RR keep the two CC after the lance is done, they might last longer. meh.
Well, in my own fantasy world, Rough Riders dont really need to last through the second assault phase. All you need is for them to stick around after they charge, then retreat after your opponent's assault phase so your line soldiers can shoot the remenants. THe lances should cause enough casualties to win most assault phases on the charge. That's how I would use em anyway...Not sure if it would be worth the points tho. Would you need 10 riders to make it through the first assault phase?
Think he means break not retreat. and in answer to the question it depends on the size of their unit if its only small say five men then a ten man unit may take them all out on the charge with 20/21 attacks. there wont be many that are left to kill your men unless something really goes wrong a harassing unit would be around 5 men a ireckon im yet to test. perhaps someone else with experience of their use could answer better?
When i said "in my own fantasy world" I was illustrating fact that I am completely ignorant on the matter since I've never used Rough Riders in an actual game before. You're right. They can't disengage from cc. And Commisarlestat is right in saying I meant break...perhaps retreat was a poor choice of words. That would be kinda cool, though overpowered...if you could use lances on every charge and disengage from combat, not unlike the eldar shining spears.
After thinking about it a little more, 5 RR's could be an effective speedbump for even dedicated cc squads. With high strength and initiative on the 12"(!) charge, you coud get 10 hits, win the first cc round and break if there is enough resistance in the next assault phase. Then the enemy is ripe for some plasma fire! Add some melta bombs and you've got a little bit of suicide tank busting as well. All that for a measly 75 points? Hmmmm...there might be some converting in my future
converting a five man squad is so easy just buy the new pistollers add in cadian helmets and guns a few grenades and hey presto instant rough riders. melta guns on them would be fun too though if you didnt take meltaguns then your opponent wouldnt know they were anti tank until it was too late!
i use glade riders or major lance conversions, i use a lot of greenstuff in them so the chests being small at the start is a great help. the horse is also plain for your own straps etc and the plates can be painted metallic colours for instant bionics. i was thinking of doing some cossack style conversions for my guard with bows instead of lasrifle little bit of conversion could turn ou pretty damn cool!.
PS il post a pic of my rough rider up at some point.
