I was thinking about a IG army for the future but I can't decide which. I decided it has to be pure infantry (perhaps a sentinal or two) and minimal heavy weapons (only in dedicated squads). Care to give us a hand?
The options I can think of:
Tanith First and Only (Loads of converting but...and I'm no good at it.)
Harkoni Warhawks (Pure drooptroops)
Catachan 2nd Regiment (Catachan Devils)
Catachan Jungle Fighters
Lasgun-Trigger happy (basically get as many lasguns as possible and Heavy Weapons in separate platoons. No special/heavies in squads)
EDIT: The damn poll wouldn't work!

There are so many factors to consider. first off is the budget. a pure infantry carapace army is gona cost as much if not more than a horder but IMHO the only way to do tanith properly is with the real figures converted catachans just dont cut it, too bulky. As for catachans many people say the models are horrible but then again that means your army may be more unique. one thing ive done before is combine the ctachans with cadians same price but more variety.
Not enough people do pure infantry with the lasgun being important IMO. if you want minimal heavy weapons then grenadiers could work as they cant take them but without chimeras they are pretty useless. warhawks are gona take a huge amount of conversion to look good so id say if you want massed infantry go cadian or catachan with heavy weapon platoons and then you can add in vets where you like, this would allow you to explore most of the specialist armies you have mentioned only later on.
Hope that helps
Budget is not much of a trouble. I want the project to be rather long and large to keep me occupied. However my painting skills and patience is low...along with my converting skills, so something elitish would be nice. I only put the lasgun one in 'cause I love the idea of 200 odd guardmen searching for cover on the table.
Apparently Infantry Grenadiers don't work as well as I think they would...so if a lot of people think that way I'll take it out of the list.
If budget is not an issue, I would say Drop Troops or lots of lasguns. Tanith is cool, but difficult. Catachans are great, but if you are in a desert, they look out of place and don't work. Grenadiers are good, but they work best with a lot of vehicle backup. So, that leaves drop troops and lasguns. If you plan to play in tournaments, drop troops are risky, since not all missions have deep strike. That could really kill you. I would make a mass lasgun army, and use doctrines to make it interesting. Cloaks, light infantry, or carapace makes the army fun to play with. I play a mass lasgun army because I can put so many guys on the table. I love swamping greater demons with guardsmen and winning. But if you want a lower model count, a mass lasgun army with some doctrines is nice.
