After realising that I have far more Marines than I ever use for my Salamander successors I have decided to split them into Iron Drakes and Disciples of Caliban lists, and pin them at around 1500 points. It will be more fun and characterfull to reuse the same units over and over, rather than choosing armies from a wide selection of models just slapped together an hour before the battle. I am also trying to steer a bit away from hordes of normal marines and the succesfull but rather bland style I have gotten used to.
Anyway, the 1200 point core for my Iron Drakes is easy enough (including a couple of options just incase I get bored), however I just cant make a final choice for a 300 point HQ. I'm going for a mix of background, interesting play and cool factor. My favorite options are (in no particular order)
1) Commander in Terminator armour with 4 man Terminator command squad with ass cannon and heavy Flamer. (terminators being "fluffy" for Salamanders)
2) Chaplain with infiltrating command squad, banner, apothacary and 2 flamers.
( I love the image of my Drakes picking a choice spot to plant a banner and use as a rally point for the army, and it lets me use my Dragon headed banner)
3) Deathwatch killteam. More as a counts as. I love the background piece where its the Salamanders who cleanse the Genestealers from the moons of Ymgarl (their 1st edition home, before the Tyranid link). Plus the new traits for Salamanders ignore the artificer part of the Sallies background that was part of what first drew me to them. A HQ with suspensor equiped heavy bolters and bolter varients would be a nice way to represent it again.
The rest of the list is;
a tactical squad with plasma gun and multi-melta (when I get around to painting it, a missile launcher until then) and a techmarine attached.
2 rhino squads with double flamers. one has a techmarine with plasma pistol the other a vet sarg with a fist.
a scout squad with hvy bolter and a couple of snipers
a predator annihilator with hvy bolters
a vindicator with POTMS
a land speeder with multi-melta and hvy flamer.
The reason this isn't in the army list section is that I dont want help with the list. Its fluffy aggressive and holds its own (I'm not going to any tourneys). The list is just there to give people an idea of what may fit.
If people could pick one and say why they prefere it I'd appreciate it lots as I've hit a mental block. If people want to suggest an alternative for about 300 points I'd also consider that, but I really like these 3 choices. Thanks guys...
I'd say the Commander with the Terminators. I may be a bit biased being that I play Dark Angels, but, I still think that its the best option.
Heavy Flamers are just waaay underrated. They have a decent strength and if in the right spot, they can cause faaar more wounds than an assault cannon can. Plus, you already have an assault cannon there, so more wounds to be had.
Plus, you can't really beat having a 2+ save.
I second the terminator motion.
You really don't get much more for your points than you do with termies.
Also since they can deep strike and are as hard as nail they have lots of uses in mission based games.
I can't really explain the Techmarine on a bike for an HQ choice after taking Scion of mars. With the full servo he has a 2+ save sporting 2 powerfist attacks at the end of combat. I give mine a MC Plasma pistol and Iron halo. Which gives him a lot of fire power he can fire when accounting for the Servo pack plus the bike. Its not that good but really fun to use zooming around the battlefield all on his lonesome or in an attack bike squad with mulit meltas.
40K-Beakies(9-14-4),Guard(4-7-2),Orks(34-12-11). FANTASY-Dwarves(15-6-7),Beasts (14-14-1), Skaven (17-17-10) DoC (6-1-2). CYGNAR (28-15-1)
So thats two votes for the Terminators, thanks for the opinion guys.
rep cookies all round...
While I can see the appeal in another Terminator unit, there's always something 'fluffy' about taking a unit of Deathwatch. As a Salamander player, I try to field a unit of Deathwatch in bigger games, for the coolness factor. That and the ability to field up to 4 power weapons in 1 unit . However, a relatively fully tooled up unit of Deathwatch will cost you about 380 points, at least if you decide to field a librarian that is. Besides, a unit of Deathwatch will allow you to paint up a bunch of different marines from different chapters, providing your army with a distinct centrepiece unit that will look sweet when completed.
If I did go this way would I be better with a terminator assault squad (as I would want the Chaplain in close combat, rather than as mobile support and leadership with the Commander)?
ps....welcome to LO.
Now for the thunderhammer, I also have a chaplain equiped similarly (you can find it in the gallery on LO). It allows you to choose between a powerfist or power weapon attack depending on the situation, making your chaplain a lot more vesatile.

I guess then I'd have to say deathwatch, they are hard as nails, have higher tech than most for their "special" choices, and they can actually have a libbie if you happen to want to put one in...though not necessary. They fit what I would expect of Salamanders more than termies, or infiltrators.
