I'm a relatively new to Warhammer 40k and I want to build up my first army. Now, hearing that Space Marines are a good starter army, I'm torn between the Blood Angels and Ultramarines. I know that Ultramarines are vanilla armys are the most basic, where Blood Angels are full on assault type army (after reading the stickies ). So, I would like some input on the Blood Angels and Ultramarines.
ultramarines to me at least could do well with a SUPERMAN emblem on their chest, as they are the basic marine profile and have little divergence to the standard list.
blood angels are the i'll get there and rip oyu limb from limb mindset, but with an ancient codex (as old as the orks and dark eldar correct me if wrong) they'll see an update soonish, some people hope. and that'll mean (for me at least) new models and a whole lotta more money spent that could make a new army and you looking at them saying i could've collected something else.
that's my take on it but then again i'm not really a great role model.
Ok fellows we have a difficult task, so we have to be more deadly than everyday.

Tactics are nice but it is violence that wins the day.
I would reccomend playing with the vanilla rules for now, painting them however you like. BA are due for an update one of these days (maybe next year?) so you could just familiarize yourself with how marines play and make the easy transition to BA.
And don't disregard the Ultramarines, we may call them smurfs but they really do embody all it is to be a Space Marine. They have a good background and plenty of character, one of ==My== favorite things to see is a good Ultramarine army.
If you're looking at style of play, Ultramarines are very flexible and jack-of-all-trades-ey whereas BA are slanted towards assault. Both are pretty easy to get to grips with, but like all marines, are difficult to truly master (mostly because everyone tools up against marines and knows how to beat them).
Hope this helps, welcome to the 41st millennium

go with vanilla marines, they're a good way to get introduced to the strategies of 40k and they are a very forgiving army because of the overall durability they possess so you won't lose a game because you make a couple easy mistakes.
Yeah, I'd say vanilla is the best flavour for you, maybe with a few sprinkles in the form of traits. Besides, you don't want to organise an army that may have its organisation changed dramatically like the Dark Angels had theirs changed, so you should collect 'norms' now and then look at the issue again when the new Blood Angels Codex comes out.
Of course, I wouldn't be a true fan of the unforgiven if I didn't at least try so... Why not dark angels? Their more shooty though, so while their similarly adaptable to vanilla, they are usually looked at as a guns of death army.
Just my 2 cents.
