Hi guys, I'm not much of a poster, but I really do enjoy this site and community. I occasionally do some maths to compare things. I know well that this doesn’t take into account weapon range and the like, but I hope some people get some use out of this graphic I made.
One of the more interesting things I noticed was how rapid firing a plasma at str 10 armour, ie from a drop pod attack, it's more effective than a melta.

It's nice that you took the time to do this.
Just what is GI? And the heavy bolter has a chance to glance AV 11, but I don't see this noted...
and i don't see the melta NOT at close ranges chances......
I mean it is technically as effective as a ML but can penetrate Armor 14 as apposed to glance.

Just feel like pointing out that while it’s more effective, every miss from the plasma gun at rapid fire has the potential to kill the wielder rather than half the misses. (or none of the misses in the case of the melta.)
I know it's more risky, you're right. They are very different weapons though, with other adv and disadvantages. Melta can instant kill t4, and can be fired while charging, but you can't use on some creatures, (or its special ability doesn’t work on all things). I guess there just incredibly different weapons. Just wanted to say that plasma could be very good at dropping down the back of a tank, and even if it scatters it will still very likely be within 12 inches, though melta may not be in 6. I guess it's still a very hard choice to make. Having your guy vapourise himself wouldn’t be too handy though.

This is one of the reasons that mathhammer is only useful to a limited extent. You have to take into account varying ranges, the potential that it'll kill the user, the extra D6 from the melta effect. It was one of the big points made with assault cannons vs. lascannons; someone calculated that assault cannons actually had more chance of destroying a vehicle, but the fact that they have half the range just blows that theory out of the water entirely.
