EDIT: Changed, I am starting 40k and IG, go to the next page as I ask for some help starting.
Fantasy has been slowly disappearing here for a while. Now Im considering 40k. Its not official yet, Im just considering and looking at options.
So, how to IG play? What does it cost for 1000 points of IG averagely and 2000 points?
In all the games Ive been playering lately, I have been playing a forces that are always the agressor. Usally more close range, or I always find myself forceing to attack. The game boards here for 40k are usally terrainless. Usally a flat open field. Occasional a hill, some trees, or a ruin terrain piece or too. Yet the majority is blank. So from what Ive been finding out it favors IG. Ive been watching some IG players and it has what I want to play and the right terrain, or so I think.
I usally see soldiers, guns, everyone usally staying back and the IG concentrating fire on the enemy. Kind of like a big firing line of all sorts of weapons. Is that really what is played on a near terrainless board? Because thats what I want now. Im tired of constant attacking, me being the agressor. Id rather play more defensively, with a big line of shooters trying to shoot back the enenmy.
I posted in the Tau forms, after looking at the GW site Tau sounded like what I wanted but now Im learning that IG are more suited for what Im looking for. A passive shoot em up army.
Also to the price? How much does it cost. This is starting a new game if fantasy truely has died here. It was just my birthday and I do have money, yet these games are more expensive vs the other miniatures games I play, jumping in is a bit harder. I play Flames of War (WWII) and Rezolution (Si-Fi) one force I play is swarming Russians that excel in CC and in Rezolution I play a aggressive Apac were there best and most common weapon is the short ranged shotgun. I really want to play something defensive now and more sitback now.
So how does IG play and how much would it cost to get 1k and 2k pointed forces?

As far as cost goes, Guard can get a little pricey. With loads of models and tanks, they can really add up.
Fortunately, guard have a great battle-force. Two of em can build up a nice 1000 point force.
For a 2000 point force your looking at 500$ easy. That’s about what I payed for mine. If you want a stand and fire army go with lots of heavy weapons and kitt out your command platoon with them. Give one to every line squad too and throw them grenade launchers as well. Stand and fire armies need plenty of bodies to absorb casualties so buy a few boxes of catachans or cadians. That will give you the manpower you need to hold your own. Best of luck!

There are 3 basic styles of play for guard:
MOB. which basically means, load up on flamers and pistols, then run around trying to out number everything as quck as you can.
MOB 2.0. same as previously stated, but you chuck 'em in transposts to move 'em a touch faster
CLASSIC. the standard stand back and use indirect fire (grenade launches, morters and the like) to awesomly pummel the enemy.
Personally, i use a combination of MOB and CLASSIC. very difficult to explain but i will do my best. while a good portion of my force stands back and pummels enemy, i use special weapon squads to run around taking care of those pesky little (well, actually often big) toublesome vehicles or units. a strong HQ tooled towards close combat thrown in a chimera never goes astray for taking out enemy HQ or monsters etc.
another friend of mine (Bobo-of-petrov) almost solely uses a CLASSIC aproach, and utilises it to its fully awesome potential:blink: check out some battle reports by LordLink for more info i guess.
other than that, its really up to your choice, after all, it is your army.
as for costs... you could probably get a good deal on a army of ebay, or even ask around the librarium trading area for some help

Well, it depends whether you want a tank heavy army or just masses of guards, I have very little time to paint so I'm one of the tank players backed up with a few grey knights.
It does depend what your want to play but each style does work just as well if played right.
Having an army which just stands there and shoots probably won't be that fun or interesting, you need a good mix of troops to get the most out of IG.
The best things about IG are the heavy/special weapons tanks and deep striking veterans with meltas IMO so just load up on those.
Battlecannons and lascannons are very long range, not to mention the basilisk!
I play my friend and he has Tau, but no way can Tau match the amount of heavy/special weapons. They may be better, but we have more!!
You can also add in some space marines/grey knights if you feel your getting swamped in CC or the enemy are very shooty as well.
If your going on sheer firepower, veterans are one of the best troop choices since you can get 3 special weapons per 5 man squad.
But your are right, Imperial Guard ARE better than Tau!!
Price for a decent 1000pt army = £150 ($300)
Price for a decent 2000pt army = £300 ($600)
Watching your enemies face when a unit of Grey knight terminators charge a team of 4 crisis suits and his commander... priceless
First off guard does seem to be the army style you want.
As for points most games (at least round here) are 1500 points, a size i dont ever remember using in fantasy.
as for cost that all depends on the miniatures and army you want, the cheapest balanced army would be around £136 i reckon that could get you 1000 points ish maybe a little more., that is two battleforces, and two boxes of cadians,
it lacks meltas or plasma, the officers would have to be converted and wouldnt have boltguns or powerswords (unless you could find the bits out of interest which fantasy army do you have? 'cos fantasy bits help to make officers stand out!)
you could get loads of heavy weapons out of the boxes concievebly with a little converting thatd be
6 missile launchers
6 heavy bolters/autocannons/lascannons
though with a little patience (or just a few more heavy weapons bases) you can easily make all of the heavy weapons in a box. As you'd have two from the battleforces, you'd be more than set.
You'd have two russes which is good tactically and also 3 small platoons.
It'd also give you a good starting point to work from you can then add special units over time to bulk it out and once you have got used to the armies paint scheme.
Hope that helps
The bulk of my paints are Soviet WWII colors, all my armies have a distinct look! Which surprising the uniform is similar to one of the more common Soviet one. Mainly a tan and brownish outfit with all the armor being the Russian green I call it. Only armor though is a helmet!
It sounds too expensive, as expected. I might go for eBay or these trade forums as suggested. It sounds like IG plays what I want and Id be playing "Classic". I play Hordes of Chaos too. I actually do have a big fancy chaos sword I didnt use for one of my Champions! Also one other cool sword thats alone, attached to no hand, perfect for superglueing on.
The IG I watched funny you mentioned power sticks. His guy had a lego cape and lego lightsaber!
Also a long time ago someone offered me like $40 for there old IG army they wanted to get rid of, havnt seen them since. Maybe they will show up. Sounded like they had a good amount and where desperate to lose it but I had no money and no interests or thoughts of 40k.
Some one quickly execute that man that was selling his IG!!! Just kidding, depending on what they guy had, $40 sounds like a pretty sweet deal if you took it.
for 1000pts your easily topping maybe depending on what organasation you take $300 maybe $400. 2000pts your topping $500 to maybe $600.
Of course ebay is a good helper on lowering some of the cost as well is saving bits and buying form battlewagon to make other things without buying anymore, also depending on your store you may get a discount(maybe) better to go to independent stores that sell 40k in my experince.
Some times open terrain is bad, really it has good and bad effects, open means almost all the time you will have LOS, everyweapon you can bare to arms can be and will be fired, dont have to move around much terrain and worry about that recently infiltrated devastator squad that magicly pops up and fires its missile launchers at your tanks. Bad thing is the enemy will have the same advantage and need I remind you of our spectacular flak armour?
IG is a stand and shoot army pirmarily, but some people do an attempt at being mobile, assaulty(doesnt turn out to good), or a combination of the 3, you'd have it easier shooting.
Thanks for all the help. Ill be leaving in a few mins to go game. All see if Fantasy is still alive. If not I have a friend whos interested in starting this and currently is low on money. So Im thinking what if we started 40k together and just shared our army until we had enough to split up.
IG sounds expensive, could be hard getting in. Yet all even ask around if anyone is selling theirs again.
