After reviewing the interresting discussion among the fine people in the "Marine Newbie?..." post and after reviewing my Space Marine Codex, I've decided to either go with Raven Guard or Blood Angels. I love the idea of fast hitting, manouverable marines and BA an RG both fit that category. I probably will not have vehicles in either case so... any veterans out there willing to give a newbie some advice? Help please!
blood angels strength definetley lies in them not taking many vehicles. for them all you want it a death company and as many squads of guys as you can fit in.
Take life seriously, its lethal.
Yeah, would have to go blood angels, they don't field many vehichles, and can be very nasty in assault. Just have to hope the new codex when it comes out doesn't screw that up. Deepstriking some death co with jump packs near or behind enemy lines sure makes them nervous, especially with a Chaplain to lead them so they don't go running around out of control, and lets not even mention the "furioso" dreadnaught.
Shrike and his boys are good, but you don't want that to be the only awesome thing in your army, if memory serves me right, I am pretty sure all BA get a +1 I, +1S bonus on the charge, so that makes the BA as a whole a bigger threat.
Battlesuits, putting the BS in BullS*%t.
Blood angles might be more exciting, they will be getting new trail rules pretty soon. Might be a good time to start playing them.
They are currently one of the best marine armies available. But that could all change.
Ravengaurd are ok, but trait marines are better. Shrikes wing is a first turn dependent, army dependent, point sink HQ choice. Most veterans are able to counter him without to much trouble. (Remember you can always make your chapter, with traits)
Blood angels by far.. Raven guard is just a codex chapter with traits. You can do that with any space marine list
- Shrikes wing will never make back their points vs a good opponent. Marines + Lighting claws + super sweet skills are STILL T4, 1W and 3+ armor save and thus die like the rest.. And you can't use cover as well because you're going to be moving towards the opponent
If you dont get first turn just concede shrug
BA use vehicles fine, that's a misconception by those who wanna use a cookie cutter army that doesn't fair as well as mixed lists. By vehicles I mean land speeders and the Baal because of the assault cannons, the rest are weak. Try to put your heavy weapons on units that can move and fire which vehicles and terminators can do
Don't rely on the death company to be 10+ guys either, as Im assuming you want to win a majority of your games. Reliability makes "bad luck" less catastrophic as you arent relying on a magic bullet. Don't take options that rely on the death company to be effective.
ATM BA do everything raven guard do and do it much better, so go with them. However I recommend buying a balanced collection for the new codex. Those BA players who actually have a decent collection will be able to make great armies, and those who dont.. well they're probably still crying about the rhino rush :p
