Another question (thanks for those responding). Is it wise to use tanks only as your Heavy Support? Tanks can be killed in one shot, while a Devastator team can take a beating. But I like tanks. So is it feasible to use only tanks as my Heavy Suport?
It depends on your play style. If you like tanks, go ahead and use them. It IS your army. I generally though find a Dev. Squad to be more effective, as you can take different types of weapons within that squad (I usually take 4 Missile Launchers). Tanks are usually good though. But again, it does matter what you do like to play with.
It matters on what you like and what you are versing. If you are versing an army with anti infantry weapons you obviously shouldn't use the devs. But if you are versing an army with lots of anti-tank weapons then use the devs. That there pretty much sums it up. But also go with what you like. But if you use a devastator squad don't just make it with six or five guys. Try to get the squad as full as possible because then they will be super easy to destroy and they will definitely fire at them.
Ah its the old staying power vs mobility question.
- Can take up to 4 heavy weapons
- Can take wounds before a drop in firepower
- Can use cover to protect it from battlecannons
- Costs a lot more then a basic marine tank
- Can not move and shoot
- Weak in assault
- Mobile heavy firepower - Can fire on the move
- Can take small arms fire without harm
- Weak in assault but can move out or avoid close combat
- Useful for contesting objectives thanks to it being faster then infantry
- You need to take more then one or they will never get to fire as all your opponents anti-tank will be aiming at it.
- Weak side armor - Keep a eye out when you move it
"Hey sarge, this lasgun is heavy. I wish we had something lighter."
FF7: ABOUT RANDOM BATTLES
Anyway, if you like playing tanks, then play tanks. Mech space marines can be very devastating if played right. And there's the rub of the argument, tanks need to be played correctly.
So, make sure you utilize your cover. Staying obscured can help marginally protect you. Make sure that the tougher parts of the armour stay pointed at the anti tank, especially with predators, make use of that turret.
Devs are a bit easier, as you don't need to do as much maintainence on them, as they can't move and fire.
Basically, all I can say is that it's your choice. We're not here to tell you what to do, we're here to give you suggestions.
As a previous poster stated, they each have disadvantages
Devestators require you to deploy them very carefully or you risk them being useless against a good opponent with a fair amount of terrain. They're more useful for defending a flank against a specific type of enemy
4x HB or ML are your best bet as devestators work *best* when used as an anti-infantry tool. Why? Because you have less wasted shots
Tanks are used (Space marine ones) for advancing a flank with troops in support. Deployment is less an issue but they are more vulnerable to specific weapons. Most armies have anti-tank weapons
If you decide to use tanks then use the cheap ones. TL-Las (or auto cannon) 2xHB Pred is your most efficient tank. Vindicator is alright too, but it takes a while to get the full use out of it
PERSONALLY my army would consist of 2 predators and some land speeders as a way to target threats and quickly destroy them. Tanks are VERY useful if you eliminate your opponents way to attack them
Excuse me, but my post is on topic, he asked if space marines tanks are viable option, my post eludes the answer: Not very easily - but their are plenty of other races which have solid tank selections.
Such as Eldar/Tau/Imperial Guard.
So instead of wasting your time, and annoying me, by hypocritically making posts which really are off topic, especially when they are about staying on topic, why not invest your time in coming up with a post with some relevant information in it.
Neither of you have laid down any solid tank tactics. Nor how one might field space marines tanks, such as weapon options, vehicle selections, and number of vehicles. Nor have you mentioned any support units and options. Finally, neither of you bothered to suggest which tank your even talking about.
Sure, their are some viable tank formations: 3 whirlwinds - which supports drop podding lists, and none mechanized lists (lists which do not have any armor over 12), this being one of the most effective formation of space marine heavy support tanks. The whirlwinds take no upgrades and deploy out of LOS. Few opponents are fast enough to destroy them, before being engaged by other units.
Other versions rely on overwhelming the opponents anti-tank. And aren't very effective, when compared to what devastators could do. Or better yet, what other armies tanks could do. They also require a significant investment in rhinos, razorbacks, and predators/vindis/landraiders. Which are relatively useless in a normal army list. Assuming their is a limit to the monetary investment a player is willing to make in order to enjoy warhammer.
So if your going to make a post about how my post is off topic, at least present some information which is on topic, states good tactics, or formation, maybe something that leads by example...
