    Leman Russ Tanks and Marines

Ok, last tank thread, I swear. What do you fellow forum members feal about Leman Russ tanks in Marine armies? Can Space Wolves still use them? It seems wierd that a wonderful tank named after a Patriarch can not be used by his inheritants.

I'd pack all of my heavy support choices with them (not Exterminators, though), but unfortunately we can't.

Only SM army I know of being able to field one are the Space Wolves. (And to answer your question: I think they still can, but I don't ever get in touch with SW.)
But even they are/were restricted to one per detachment, as far as I recall. And more so even to a Leman Russ Exterminator (which isn't quite the best Leman Russ out there, if you ask me).

And since there's no legal way of allying SM and IG armies in one detachment there's no legal way to include any Russes in your Space Marine army.

As for it seeming odd that we can't take any tanks named after Space Marine Primarchs: I don't know about the "fluff" of why they have been named after Leman Russ (like if he was the inventor or if the inventor just wanted to pay homage to him), but at least from a game balance point of view it would definitely over-power Space Marines to have both some of the best standard infantry AND some of the best standard vehicles.

Definately a balance issue, as the last thing people want is to have to worry about 72" S8 pie plates raining down, while some of the best base troops in the game advance on them to shred them with bolters and cc. The SW can still use the exterminator, its a decent fire support choice, especially against horde armies (nids, guard, orks).
Battlesuits, putting the BS in BullS*%t.

The only marines that can be fielded with a regular Leman Russ would be that of the Grey Knights. Through allying or being allied with they can field such tanks
I'm not here for the respect, just here to spread the clarity of a very complicated game

Well, they may be Space Marines fluffwise, but they're definitely Daemon Hunters gamewise. Which is why I have not referred to them.
Anyhow: still they can't exactly take "such tanks" as allies are limited to a single heavy support choice, as far as I know, so there will only ever be one as with the Space Wolves.

Point taken. As Grey Knights are "marines" but not really, and yes the DH only can have one Leman Russ at Max.

Space Wolves are still allowed to field them under the current codex. However that may change with the next release. It is however more of the variant leman russ tank outfitted with the twin linked autocannon that they are able to use. (the exterminator).

The other SM chapters I don't think they get that option and the Grey knights allied with the guards can get them that route.

I find it fair considering that the land raider was at one point a guards tank that they no longer get to field because it is an exclusive tank to the SM now.
Where the heck did all them guardsmen come from?

Great Wolf! Is that the howl of the 13th?

It was out of paying homage to Leman Russ after the Space Wolves came to the aid of a Forge World during the Horus Hershey. The forge world was on the brink of falling to the dark chaos assualt when out of the skies came the Space Wolves in all its full glory. The forge world was saved and out of respect, dedicated the IG most trusted tank after Leman Russ of the most trusted chapter of the SM.

Very simple. Not all Space Marine Legions had Leman Russ as their primarch. So, that's why only the Space Wolves get a Leman Russ as opposed to other chapters.

Plus, there's a huge balance issue. If Space Marines had free access to Leman Russes, then that's all you'd see. Best Personal and Best Vehicle armour makes for a very broken army.

Sure, grey Knights can ally with Guard to get LR, but look at the basic cost of a Grey Knight. Not cheap, that's why they allow Lemans with Grey Knights. GW felt that the point cost of the Grey knight helped to balance the Leman Russ.

Space Marines are a specialist fighting force and as such do not carry around so much armour so they can deploy quickly this can be seen in the drop pod assult tactic employed by most marine players. My question to you is where would a leamun russ fit in this? it is a tank designed for a long hard slog and doesnt do much that lascannons or massed bolter fire cant.
