Welcome to Librarium Online!
I'm new to the dark angels and i need some startegies on how to beat my brothers imperial guard force. I'm guessing he's will be troop heavy
I'll be using a ravenwing/deathwing force I need to get a head start on him as we are very competitive.
If you can't beat them, join them!
Otherwise drop pods go a long way. Trust me, I know.
Also remember that 'no army has ever secured victory without exploiting the enemy's weakness' (quote from the IG codex).
So this means, attack their leadership, and target them in close combat. If he's a good player, you have no hope of beating him in a slogging match at long range.
Basically, Imperial Guard can be configured to have one of the best leadership system in the game. The problem is that it's vulnerable. Kill the commanders and the leadership falls apart. At that time guardsmen start running real good. At that time, with any luck your drop pods come down and wreack havoc amongst his lines in close combat. They have one shooting phase before that though, so watch out. But just say you drop a dread or two, you shouldn't meet too much enemy fire. If most of your units survive, then you're halfway to victory if his units are tightly packed. Just consolidate each turn.
Now, as to what units to take. Whirlwinds hurt, they're no basilisk- but are perfect for taking out the command squad in one hit. I suggest taking two, since Imperial guard are so vulnerable to them. That will hopefully destroy their leadership.
For close combat, you decide what to put in the drop pods. Remember not to invest to many points. Guardsmen die nearly as easily against tacs as they do against termies. A dread or two can help too.
Now for some anti-tank. That again is up to you, predators, missile tacs., whatever really.
From there you should have a fighting chance. But it would have been helpful if you had given more info about the mission, points limit and both you and your brother's army lists.
Anyway, I hope that helped somewhat. But take into account that this is from an ex-SM IG player's perspective, of what I hate to face when playing marines. I'm sure some other SM vets. would be glad to lend a hand.
All the best and good luck. (I know how annoying brothers can be, bloody eldar)
thanks alot for the advice, but I need some info on how to use my ravenwing, as i know if i go heads up with him, ill get shot to pieces:cry: . I know what to do with my deathwing
Using cover and loading a flank will probably be a good idea. IG ordnance and heavy weapons will really spoil your day given your relatively low numbers. If the guard can't bring their firepower to bear on you, you can get stuck in and roll up their line.
Having an army and not owning a rulebook is like owning a car with no steering wheel.Originally Posted by amishcellphone
Thats funny, that me and my bro, I play guard and he plays DA. Anyway I did play DA for a while (sold them to my bro) so I have got some decent advice.
with the ravenwing, either use you scout move to use first turn Deathwing strike.......or use scout move, then turbo booster you way to his front line (make sure you line yourselft up for a straight shot to some cover), this will put you in great range to deepstrike turn2 with teleport homes, and the best part is the bikes will have 3+ invulnerable saves. After that use the bikes to either tank hunt or tie up HW teams.
Now while you are doing that he is going to be real worried about bikes with meltas/plasma, and termies real close to his line (I know I get nervous when that kind of stuff is close by). This is going to free up some attention from the rest of your force. There is no safe way to get to his lines, drop pods leave you vulnerable for a turn to a LOT of lasfire which will bring your precious marines down. Dreds will be even worse off if it doesn't land behind something.
Rhino rushing would be even worse as the guard will eat your tanks for breakfast soo.....drop pods would be your best bet, you just have to hope for some luck on landing them. In all honesty, don't even bother with tanks, unless you get a whirlwind and he doesn't have a basilisk. Take a few dev squads, and some combat squads all loaded down with ML/LC, and a few HB, a plasma cannon wouldn't hurt either. Target his Russes, they are exceptional at popping marines out of thier power armor. If you can kill the Ld squads go for it, but don't waste all your shots doing so.
Just keep in mind the guard squads are nothing more than wounds to be absorbed for heavy weapons, its a cruel way to look at it, but its true and effective. Hope this helps as the guard can be a huge nightmare for marines (I know I haven't lost a game to a marine player yet with my guard, my brothers DA included).
Battlesuits, putting the BS in BullS*%t.
Definitely use your RW and DW as a first turn hammer to smash his units to pieces. I'd reccomend taking either Belial or Sammael to benefit from an Apothecary. 1 ignored failed save is a huge deal in such small units.
Also, a Whirlwind w/ incendiary missiles makes a mess of IG (no cover save for you!).
Most of this depends on what sort of IG army your brother is fielding. With doctrines he can make all sorts of crazy regiments. What kind of force does he normally field, because your counters can vary considerably depending on his composition.

Short-range Tactical squads in drop pods. Flamers!
Yay for 4th edition rapid fire rules!
Otherwise, Terminators can mess them up if you avoid the battle cannons, plasma, lascannons, hidden power weapons (can be nasty) and general AP2 nastyness. Personally wouldn't use Terminators: numbers rather than power works better against IG. Since they can put out a ludicrous amount of small arms fire that can take down even the real potent SM forces, sheer numbers can mitigate this. You know, one Terminator or two Marines?
Also remember that turbo-boosting gives you that nice little invulnerable save. Remember this when moving out in front of his Leman Russ.

Come, sons of LO! Kneel before Poodle!
Mr_Wayne: "Some people believe that the World Eaters do not field any ranged weaponry. Those people often die at a distance."
I dont know much about what SM get, but if you can drop flamers or heavy flamers in on his flank that would make for a great time. Also termies are not a good idea as I have killed 2 with my crappy flashlights before. Also anything that will get you into CC asap will work wonders on him.
Just because a lasgun can kill a terminator doesnt make the terminator a bad choice
Ive killed demon princes with lasguns.. Better stop using them!
The easiest way to defeat IG is to simply use cover and reduce their effectiveness, then get close and kill them.. Rinse, repeat. Difficulty is in actually doing that correctly
Personally, the way I think that you can best defeat imperial guard is to get them locked in Combat, and block their LOS with said combats. As you can't shoot through combats, blocking LOS gives some good walking lanes for your sloggers, and using squads like Assault Squads means that the combat can finish quickly, and move on to the next.
If that doesn't work, short range firefights are the next best bet. Drop in, and rapid fire.
