I am obsessed with the idea of giving all my sergeants lightning claws. An extra attack, re-roll wounds, and no armor save!!!
What are the drawbacks?
unlike a power fist (or the like) you don't get an increase to your strength, and I'm pretty sure you need a pair to get +1 attacks (don't quote me on it). If that's true it means it costs you a shooting attack, (like a pistol) in order to have them.
They're also a bit more expensive (points wise) than other options, like a power wpn, or fist. Also, you have to make a conversion in order to use it.
Other than that, I'm a fairly big fan of using claws, and it's been my experience that a lot of people like using them, so it's not just you.

I was thinking of giving a Commander the claws and a jump pack and then giving him a command squad, all with jump packs and claws (basically Shrike's set up).
I saw that GW has the veteran claws for sale as bits...I think it was $3 a pair.
I fight against Necrons a lot and I want to see just how fast I can disassemble those robots with this set-up.
Right, you only get an extra attack for two weapons with a lightning claw if both weapons are lightning claws. As to losing the ranged attack, although true like 99.9% of the time, the new Dark Angels codex does allow up to three members of a Company Vet Squad to have a pair of lightning claws AND a bolt pistol, which doesn't seem quite natural to me, but does work RAW. They're still just as expensive, though.
I really need to be going to sleep, but if no one posts about it soon I'll probably do some number-crunching stuff about how re-rolling failed wounds compares to the power fists strength increase.
I think that the claws really come into their own when used on lower toughness models, like Tau and Guard. It can be considered a safety net that allows you some guaranteed wounds for the twos and ones that happen to come during combat.
It tends to be taht people prefer the powerfist over lightning claws on Sergeants as the PF is half the cost of a pair of LC's and they can take out high toughness minis with some ease.
But, remember, it's all personal preference. If you want lightning claws, then take lightning claws.
The first part of this may not continue to be true for very long, though. The Dark Angels codex, again, has every model paying for a power fist what only multi-wound models pay for them in Codex: Space Marines. If this is the beginning of a trend ... well, you see where I'm going.
I can confirm the BA codexs uses all the new DA pt values as well
However, only 2 models in the book can actually take lightning claws so..
ATM you're better off with 3 power weapons than 1 set of lightning claws on your 1wound models
Lightning Claws to me are something that should be used when the unit they are in is good for them. for instance when it comes to my Deathwing Termies
I use 5 of them. I love their options I really do. Personally though I look at this like I do other units, what is their roll on the field. I use mine with Storm Bolters/powerfists. Why. Because I want them to be VERY balanced, and SB/PF (with assault cannon or heavy flamer) is the best way to entertain both shooting and cc. If I throwin in a single lightning claw I will lose the extra shooting that I want for this unit. I would personally make a unit specifically for CC by giving them lightning claws. I just dont like the whole mixing claws and thunder hammers and storm bolters and assault cannons....I think they lose the ability to cary out a specific task when you do that!
As far as using them in a Vet Squad I think it is ok to do because they are usually a CC heavy unit. So that would be fine, but if you throw in the lightning claws then their specific roll needs to be CC cleanup.

You're doing great, until someone assaults you with a dreadnought/wraithlord
And then you'll cry as you remove your squad who can't touch the dread. (unless you get lucky with kraks).
Oh wait, you can't even touch the wraithlord with kraks because of it's weird rules.
They have their merits definitely. But, don't always ignore the might powerfist.
