Hello everyone, there's an interesting event going on at my local GW store this Thursday. It's going to be a 30 minature battle that has to be from the Troops selection. No point limit. Just 30 minatures from the troops. So that's a potential 3 10 man Grey Knight Squads, and since I'm fighting other troops, it'll make for an interesting fight. Quality over Quantity will win this battle, and I think I have that in ample supply.
My questions are as follows:
1. Is there anything special I should load out onto my Justicar? Like a Thunderhammer or something of the sort? No limit on points that can be taken, as I said.
2. This one of the few occasions where taking a Psycannon or an incinerator a good idea?
3. What would probably be my worst enemies? My opponents must take only minatures that are available in the Troops choice. Whether this includes units that can only be taken as troops if a certain army is chosen, like Khorne Berserkers or Wraithguard, I'm not sure. I think they're legal though.
4. There's an extra, very interesting rule in effect as well. My 30 minatures can be from any army's troops, so I can mix and match, say take Grey Knights in Power Armor and Tau Fire Warriors, or Guardsmen, anything as long as its in a squad and the maximum number of total minatures doesn't surpass 30. So, I'm curious if I should swap out 10 or so of my Grey Knights for some Fire Warriors? My other army is Tau, so that's why they're an option.
There will be no transports, tanks, super HQs, any of that sort. The goal is to kill as many of the stores' 30 minatures while retaining as many as possible.
My most likely opponents will be Chaos, Nurgle and Khorne; Eldar, Imperial Guard, Space Marines, Orks and possibly, my brother Grey Knight Players, but thats a bit iffy. As for what the stores' using, and thus, what I aim to maim, I have no clue.
I aim for victory, since the winner will get a free box of minatures. I'm praying for victory, for more Grey Knights in Power Armor.
Since there's no point limit, why not go with 6 5-man squads? That'll give you twice as many special weapons, and allow you to direct your fire "more effectively".

Whoa...i'd like to see this game.
as Scott said, i'd have 6x5 man squad of PAGK. Give your Justicars every upgrades you can think of seeing as points don't matter. From the top of my head i can think of:
Icon of the Just
heck give the 6 Justicars psycannon bolts as well:shifty:
there you will have 100+ point Justicar, how nice for a no limit game.
Thunderhammers? didnt know you could do that. Plus you wouldnt need it anyway seeing as you wont be dealing with any multi wounded models. I wouldnt bother even taking any other kind troop choice as PAGK will absolutely dominate anything. Whoelse can outcombat and outshoot us(60 stormbolter shots anyone?)
Dont forget The Shrouding!
I think the way to do it is go with 6 five man squads, with 2 psycannons each. No army is going to be able to match that fire power...you will have esentially 12 heavy weapons; I doubt anyone else will have more than six. Just deploy on your backline and fire away until people get close...then let your justicar clean up up anything that has a 3+ save...really sounds like game over to me.
DO NOT forget sacred incense for your squads. works wonders against chaos.
this seems like a very poor idea for a tournament. It really favors the armies that have access to awesome troops units and makes it very hard for swarm armies to hang in there.
Take life seriously, its lethal.
Well, it's like this to offset an earlier event where you could only bring troops 15 points or less, in squads of at least 10. Maximum point value was 1000. Goal, was to eliminate as many as possible. A Tyranid Gaunt player ended up winning that day. That was alot of gaunts...
We also had an event where it was just a mega tank battle. No points limit. Just as many tanks you can bring. Guy who won was fielding 14 Leman Ruses, 5 Land Raiders, 2 Thunderers, a Basilisk, a couple of Hellhounds, a Land Raider Crusader and a Baneblade. It was horrific.
So as you can see, the management at the store's been doing extreme battles for events just for the heck of it. More for the fun and the "By The Emperor! Who the hell has this many Gaunts/Tanks/Marines/Etc!?" Factor than anything else. Not really meant to be competitive. I think they're using it as an excuse to get rid of stock they can't sell anymore. Everyone's been getting older, outdated models as their prizes, as well as miniatures they can't sell because they've been opened, the plastic cover ripped, etc. Perfectly good, but just stupid excuses as to why they're not good merchandise any more.
Besides, I think this is just a warm-up series of stupid events, meant to get everyone pumped up for the super Raw-run tournament next-next weekend.
So it sounds like I'm going to be taking alot of Psycannons, Justicars, and plain ol'death in a shroud. Hoo-rah.
I think I heard of one guy around here who fielded something like 10,000 points of Guard at a psychotically huge battle some time back... The crazy part? I think it was nearly all infantry...
Ten. Thousand. Points. of GUARDSMEN..... Oh, the horror.....
