Well, I've been lurking here quite a while, contemplating a Tallarn/"Lawrence of Arabia"-esque custom regiment for some time now, and it will be a few months (at least) before I can start with it, but I've been looking over how a potential list would go.
Before anyone asks, yes, I did a search for Schaeffer and his "Last Chancers" before posting here, and the thing I notice is, everyone seems to want to use him as the primary HQ. I realize this is legal, but I personally wouldn't want that, for fluff reasons, I guess.
My question is, has anyone written a tactica for Schaeffer and his merry men? If not, can anyone tell me if and how they field him and the Last Chancers as a support unit for an existing (including existing HQ) list?
A fellow Schaeffer fan, didn't really think anybody else really used him/them. I agree with you fluffwise as far as not making him the main HQ, as in the stories he is never leading an army so much as leading the suicide squad in conjunction with the army to accomplish whatever goals.
In my lists I use them as bullet magnets/wreakers of havoc. I bassically get 8 last chancers, upgrade them to specialist, then get them some nice weapons and pair them off in twos for subunits (max of 5 subunits). So basically one pair of plasma guns, one HW team (HB or LC), one pair of sniper rifles (pinning goodness), and one set of meltas, and lastly Schaeffer and Kage as thier own subunit.
They all infiltrate and start thier part of the wreaking havoc, not only are the weapons they bring to bear bad, but at better BS, and there is 5 squads to be shot at to top it all off. So each squad that wants to shoot them has to waste all thier fire on 2 guys/girls which always pass morale if schaeffer is alive. If they do kill them, you have just had them waste a whole squad worth of fire to kill two people, and not shoot the rest of your army. Schaeffer and Kage are for counter assault or picking off weaker support units in certain armies in cc such as IG HW teams, or tau anything short of battlesuits.
Granted each last chancer is expensive when done this way, but its fun for a change, and can be quite amusing.
However this does not seem like what you may have had in mind when designing the fluff of your army, I am sure other people use them in other ways, but this is just my way of using them. Hope it helps, or at least gives you something to think about when you want a kick.
Battlesuits, putting the BS in BullS*%t.
No, that's interesting. I like it. My only issue is the "fire magnet" concept. I realize the fluff indicates these guys are a suicide squad, but that concept has never sat well with me (just one reason why I won't use conscripts, either). I'm not a super-experienced gamer, but I'm looking at this future project as one that will be the ultimate test of my hobby skills, from conversion to painting to actual gameplay tactics. In short, with due respect to those who like "suicide" teams, I'd rather deploy and use my forces with enough attention and skill that I don't need a "speed bump" or "fire magnet." If I need units to do that, I figure, I must be doing something wrong somewhere else, and fielding a suicide unit will only fix the symptom, not the problem.
So I'm more interested in seeing just what Schaeffer and his boys are capable of. Has anyone tried using them in roles other than primary HQ or suicide squad? What builds do you guys find are effective?
If you get down to it, the last chancers themselves excluding Schaeffer and Kage are bassically expensive vets, they bassically do everything vets can, they just cost more points, and get the whole auto pass morale checks w/ schaeffer.
You might also use Schaeffer and Kage to bolster a JO command squad w/ honorifica, power weapon, and some plasma or flamer toting bodyguards. The subunits can also be used to support other units with similar goals, like a subunit w/ plasma backing a line infantry squad w/ similar weapons.
There are soo many possibilities because of all the war gear they can take, as a matter of fact if you were looking for a good counter assault unit you could give them all power weapons and make one nasty cc squad. Schaeffer, Kage and 8 last chancers all decked w/ powerweapons lurking behind your lines waiting for someone to get close enough. Sadly kage doesn't have a power weapon, but thats 9 powerweapons in one unit, and on the charge you are looking at almost 30 power weapon attacks....ouch. And at 278 points thats not to shabby.
Battlesuits, putting the BS in BullS*%t.
Seeing as you are taking a normal HQ choice, you could take two special weapons teams and give them both demolition charges.
Then you could take Schaeffer and a total of 5 'small as possible' subunits, all armed with demolition charges.
Then deep strike EVERYONE!
Fun for the whole family.
P.S Take a basilisk or other ordinance throwing device as well, just to really rub it in! This way, his men will be bunched up beind cover (but probably not IN cover), and bam!! your drop troops arrive and ruin his afternoon.
EDIT:In all seriousness, I field suicide units all the time. Not what I posted above (although that would be fun) but guard is all about suicide grunts. You're not sending them in there to just kill stuff, you're sending them in to die and hopefully kill stuff. If I need units to do that, I figure, I must be doing something wrong somewhere else, and fielding a suicide unit will only fix the symptom, not the problem.
For example, the whole 'break and shoot' tactic doesn't work at all without a suicide squad or two, and heavy flamer sentinels work best as burning speedbumps.

Also, you should google "garfield minus garfield". Awesome.
There are certainly more than a couple fo Schaeffer fans around. I've been toying around with several lists based around him and a bunch of Last Chancers since I saw an idea for an interesting army on another Forum.
Basically, his idea was a scratch force of regular troops and armed citz/gangers in a last ditch defense of their home hive. Basically Drop Troops, except they were popping out of sewers or ambush positions instead of Valkyries. We ended up with a force that included 40 odd Plasma weapons plus 8-10 Meltaguns.
I've only used him once, recently against a friend who is so far unbeaten with his Tau army. I fielded Schaeffer and 8 specialist melta-weilding last chancers, starting them as 5 deepstriking 2 man squads.
Things were going badly for turns 1 and 2... but then came the deep strike and totally changed the game (eventually lost anyway, heh). They can cause absolute carnage, and I should have given them plasma guns for the rapid firing at his tanks. Those twin-linked railgun battlesuits were wiped out and a devilship I think, plus the Colonel himself wiped out an entire Fire Warrier squad in one go (sweeping advance).
Next time I'm using a 2000pt army i'm DEFINATELY taking Schaeffer - the last chancers are one of the most fun units in the game - might try infiltrating demolition squads next time!
isnt it possible to have 20 plasma guns if you use schaeffer?
Beer, Pipes, and Guns... Dwarves had the right idea.
As for a whole army based on plasma, deepstrike, suicide and insanity, look no further than my recent thread in the army list forum here. It's still on the first page I think.
<--Otherwise press my screen name
But what I like to do is give them is carapus, bionics and plasma, then deepstrike them right next to a dev squad. fried marines anyone?

In the rule book, on page 5, it says:
"The most important rule about playing games of Warhammer 40K is to have fun!"
