The attack bike squadron!
I just read Chaosbryns bike tactica and he claim(as most other tacticas does) that the attack bike squadron is poor. Mostly because the are vulnerable.
I could not disagree more! Attack bikes in squadrons is amazing!
They are not vulnerable if you are smart and the rest of your army is fit for them.
I tend to use 2x 2 attackbikes for tournaments. For me they are game winners. They are my favorite choice after the assault squad!
Lets see: 2x 2 attackbikes:
2 cheap and fast moving scoring units. Rather tough with T5 and 2 wounds. Good and long ranged firepower. Ability to rig(WS required) objectives and tigh up enemy units in close combat.
Vulnerable to str +8. -AP3 weaponry.
How to use the squadrons?
As flankers and mobile firesupport. Secondly attack and tigh enemy units. Crisis suits, devastor squads etc.
They are best with a chapter master in the army for purpose of leadership 10.
Use target denial. Always try to place the squadron out of sight from +str 8. -AP3 weaponry.
With a few Rhinos and one or two predators, they get even better, because the enemy has to divide his +str 8 fire. Vehicles is also great for target denial...aka moving wall.
They can be alright, I used 2 squadrons of 3 with Ravenwing on occasion and single ones with Multimeltas with my regular DA.
I did however have the 2+ save version, and the knowledge that my entire army would out manouver and assault where I wanted.
They're good, but losing 50+point models to ML bites badly and with an IG squad with ML costing barely more than that and taking 3 or more rounds to kill with 2 H.Bolters you're going to die.
They're certainly underrated, but they're not superb either.
Every time you read this sig: a fairie dies!
I like Attack Bike squadrons, but like Silver Wings said they aren't the best nor the worst unit in the codex. The thing with Attack Bikes is that whatever they can do, a LS can do better for the same price, not to mention that the LS is a vehicle and it ignores terrain. Competitively the LS one-up's the ABS at every corner, so people generally leave them on the shelves.
The main reason that I use ABS's in my SW army is because of fluff. SW don't really like to fly all that much, and so I thought it'd make sense to avoid the LS's for my army. I'm reconsidering that stance, though, since my Attack Bikes have underachieved in nearly every game, and only seem to consistently die whenever I use them. They're cool models all right, but they just don't cut it in usefulness.
Lone Wolves (Space Wolves) - 2092 pts
Hive Fleet Basilisk (Tyranids) - 1767 pts
Chaos Fleet - 900 pts
This is not right. The thing with Attack Bikes is that whatever they can do, a LS can do better for the same price
Yes the LS got more bang for the money. But they are not worth a dime as soon they are glanced.
LS is much less resilient to small arms fire and is much more difficult to hide. One lucky bolter shot and the LS is lost. LS might be better if you dont have any vehicles besides, because they are resilient to high str. weapons, by being a skimmer.
Secondly LS is unreliable as scoring unit and cannot assault.
By using target denial the attackbikes is much less vulnerable that the LS.
Attack Bikes can be a great unit, in the right situation. I've had a 3 bike squad drop 3 Oblits in turn 1 with their multi-melta's. I've had another squadron hold up an entire flank of charging Tyranids in CC, while the rest of my army enveloped him.
Others in my group don't see the value of them, but I myself have been saved by them more then let down. Their a fast, sturdy unit that can be relied upon to hold an objective for a while, or lay down some serious fire power when needed. Much more is gained for those points, then I think you get for even the Land Speeder Tornado which can be dropped in just one shot with a Bolter.

I like Attack Bikes in my Templar army... but that's because it lacks the choice of having a devastator squad. :shifty:
