I just had an idea.
People playing against Space Marines complain about assault cannons all the time, yeah? "Rah rah rah, no reason an assault cannon should blow up a Land Raider, rah rah rah" even though if it blew up your Land Raider then you're playing SM as well and could get your own. Anyway. People (in my experience) most often make this complaint when faced with squadrons of Land Speeder Tornadoes, which are held by most of the community to be "totally cheese" and "cheesily bearded", both valid accusations. Games Workshop's last move to balance these problems - in the 4th edition Dark Angels codex - was to limit them to one assault cannon per squadron, and to introduce a compulsory Typhoon to force people to buy the damn useless things.
Regardless, everyone knows that Land Speeder Tornadoes, with twelve Rending shots per squadron and a possibility of three squadrons for approximately 700-ish points, thus resulting in thirty-six assault cannon shots per turn, are a better way to kill heavy tanks than a lascannon devastator squad. Because of Rending.
My first response to anyone making such a complaint is to agree with them, and thus placate their righteous nerd rage. My next step is to say "Games Workshop should really remove Rending from assault cannons" but Games Workshop is clearly unwilling to do that, given that all they've done in Dark Angels is restrict how many you can take for silly reasons, rather than lower the power of the gun itself. But I just had a different idea.
Why don't they redo Tornadoes so that, instead of an assault cannon, they're armed with a nose-mounted autocannon?
Think about it. You hardly ever see autocannons in Space Marine armies - our Dreads and Devastators can't take them, unlike Chaos. It's one point higher strength, but it loses two shots and Rending. It's still an anti-infantry weapon, and its range is longer. And it's hardly impossible in terms of modeling; the assault cannon comes in the Tornado box as an extra metal bit. You just have to replace that in future boxes with a metal autocannon. For people who already own Tornadoes, it's simple; buy a three-dollar bit from GW, break off the superglued metal AC and re-glue the autocannon. I've done it with multi-meltas in between tournament games.
It's balanced, so balanced you could even lower the cost of the Tornado by ten points, it looks cooler, and it makes a little-used gun more prominent. Why don't they do this? It solves every conceivable problem with LST squads.
Or alternately, you could put the thing on a frickin' Typhoon and make the bastards useful. No-one wants a Land Speeder whose only claim to fame is a single missile launcher - the multi-melta is a better tank hunter since the Speeder can easily get in range and the assault cannon is a better infantry killer. So stick an autocannon there and you suddenly have three shots capable of killing light-to-medium tanks being fired over the entire board. Suddenly people are like "Wow! I want a Typhoon who can easily wipe out whole enemy speeder squadrons and even get the back armour of that Leman Russ to blow his ass up!"
Why is it that I have all the good ideas and Games Workshop never do?

I think that is Genius, the only problem is that the auto cannon has become more of a chaos gun than a space marine gun. I do like it and think it makes sense, the only probelm is that it seems to be closing the gap between space marines and the soon to be spikey space marines.
I think my (never been tried before) solution would be to take a shot away from the assault cannon; if it were heavy three instead of heavy four or if it had the sisters rule of ignoring saves on a six to wound instead of rending just to keep it an anti infantry weapon.
I like the idea of an auto cannon on the Typhoon, but I would make it another varient. Perhaps Cyclone, matching up the auto cannon and the TML is a great idea. Rep the guy folks for using his head.
breath, sight, squeeze.
now double tap just for grins
and Another One bite's the dust.
A bolter round for all that oppose the Emperor.
They changed the Assault Cannon from Heavy 3, jams to Heavy 4, Rending cos nobody liked them or used them (supposedly), I always had 1 on my Dreadnought and 1 in my Termie squad...
so they should change them to Heavy 4 and then they have more shots and better strength than a Heavy bolter in exchange for the 12" of range
Typhoon should have twin linked or 2 missile launchers.
Both should be limited to a squad of 1 that takes up a FOC
Standard Land Speeders with bolter or melta could be grouped in squads of 3 for one FOC, possibly allowing 1 of the speeders to be upgraded to a tornado or typhoon.
While they are at it bring out the Land Speeder Poodle with Heavy bolter and autocannon which is anti infantry/light vehicles.
and let Termies be bigger than 5 man, like vets, as they are vets in tactical dreadnought armour anyway.. I want to keep my 8 man assault termie squad

Bah, it's GW. Instead of fixing the problem, they'll wait until 5th ed and nerf assault cannons into the ground.
Personally, I think the ass. cannon is fine. Playing against it or with it doesnt bother me or anyone in my community because we suck it up and learn to cope with the other armies strengths.
But the autocannon is a great idea. The only thing that irks me is how to get a heavy recoil weapon (autocannon) onto a somewhat flimsy landspeeder, fluff wise it may be a bit too light to use an autocannon.
And if that happened, I am fielding autocannon speeders. My marines really need help taking out skimmers.
O.O...oh crap if they made those we got flying CSM havocs with TH!

Overuse is seen here as much as everywhere else, with one guy bringing 9-13 ass. cannons to every tourny. Once again, we learn to cope and we develop stratagies to take out an enemies strength. A wise man once said - "Where you are weak, feign strength; and where you are strong, feign weakness."
