Just wondering if there is anyone out there who actively uses a SM Vindicator. Does the thing really get a few shots in??....Does it work best against armies like the tryanids versus armies like the tau?? I've been debating getting one of these, as I often face off with tyranids, but was looking for some guidance on the decision.
I would use a vindicator to take out the most annoying pricks in the army ie: wyches, red terror and everything that's hard to kill in close combat. After a vindicator shoots, it will be in range for most weapons, so try and take out units at the front of your enemies army, so the rest might not be in range for shooting the vindicator. Another option is to put it alongside with devastators with long range heavy weapons so that your opponents might get the idea (don't come any closer, because you won't)
Hope that helped
I regularly use a vindicator in my ultramarine army, it is one intense weapon Its wiped out entire advancing squads in one shot (a squad of terminators in one shot is very impressive!, its range really sucks though. However you can place it in corners corridors of clear terrain, where it annihilates anything which tries to attack you and can most of the time make armies change their route to keep out of range of it.
The enemy cant really shoot at the vindicator until the vindicator is in range of its demolisher cannon, however this hardly works except in city fight, which is where it really excels!

Vindicator: just the thing for turning ranks of foul plague marines into craters of oozing, green goo.
ditto for imperial guard and bezerkers. i find it best to place it last in the heavy weapons deplotment phaze. then place it as far away from any heavy tank killing. after this the opponent must assign some none role specific squads to deal with it and they generally are not able to do this in the first turn.
i then (shock horror) move it forward. this is because it again forces a great deal of fire power to be wasted binging off armour that it cant penetrate rather than firing at my advancing rhinos or squads.
if you can add the threat of a scout squad 18" from any anti tank groups that are assigned to deal with it, such as weapon squads in the command section of the imperial guard. this again splits and wastes fire and allows you to survive most of the worst attacks. the only time i dont recommend vindicators is in a really assaulty army as it will end up later in the game sitting around doing nothing for risk of hitting your own troops.
sorry i started to ramble its a habit, to the point
yes it will get to shoot if you deploy it right
yes it will really help you against tyrinids
as you will be able to target the big bugs, squash them flat.
if they are out of range it means they cant assault you (all good)
if they are out of range hit the small ones and watch swarms dissapper in a flash
in summary get a vindicator, get a whirlwind, get a devestator squad with 4 plasma cannons
Basically, if you get a Vindicator you will get one or two shots off against Tyranids. I personally think getting 2 or 3 whirlwinds would be more useful as they are sooo cheap and give you some pretty powerful ordinance to clear out his swarms of gaunts and stealers. In a dev squad I would take a couple plasma cannons and a couple lascannons, plasmas for taking out more swarms, lascannons for the bigger bugs. Remember to make it a 10 man squad so you can lose your regular marines first. Good luck, let us know how it turns out
I use my vindicator to tackle Orks who are large in numbers and good at close combat s oI find that I normally destroy them!
In the end there is only war.
I saw some one with three vindicators once in an assault army.... fool
