I'm putting together my first SM Biker sqd and I am having difficulty with the decision of weather or not to base them.
In all the pictures I have ever seen, I have NEVER seen bikes on bases (well maybe once)
Is it something that simply everyone doesn't do?

It's also another opportunity to tie the units of your army together and continue themed bases if you're doing them.
Still- this could just be me; I was thinking about basing a LR the other night.
No more NG spearmen, thanks! Now I need some pump-wagons!
but anyway, to the original question: i'd say base them for sure bc nothing upsets me more than paint chipping. cept maybe a weapon arm breaking off. also keep in mind the fact that you may end up moving them among cover and the base will give you the needed stability to be able to place them on the edge of a hill or something without tumbling over.
I tend to put the minis on bases if they come with them. It makes the model more stable, and its alot less work than trying to stabilize them otherwise.
It's up to you, but I vote to put them on bases.
In addition to protecting your mini's from scratches/dings if they topple into one another, the bases also tend to space them apart from enemy models in melee which can also carelessly result in unwanted contact.
Games Workshop is the Wal-Mart of hobby products, except for the low prices. The lack of respect and profit mongering is there in spades.
Also, with bases, you can make them do wheelies.

I'm all for basing. It'll help your models stand and falling over and chipping the paint jobs, and it offers plenty of conversion and posing possibilities. You might struggle in finding a good, rounded base for the Bikes since they only come with square ones, but if you don't mind that then you're set.

Hive Fleet Basilisk (Tyranids) - 1767 pts
Chaos Fleet - 900 pts
And, as a side note, not basing them is illegal, according to the BASES rules on pg 6.
Thank you all for the help!
To base it is then!
