Ok ive been playing IG since the dawn of time, and i think im going to stick with them! I have won or tied more battle than with any other army i have played. But I'm going to step it up a bit. I think im going to replace my infantry platoon with grenadiers and storm troopers instead. But, my deilemma is this, Deep strike them? Give them chem inhalers? hardened fighters? Which doctrines do you reccomend? I usually use the cameleoline, hardend fighters, sharpshooters, light infantry, and iron discipline doctrine with my regular list. ( I'm tooled towards old school city fight rules). I've got a good solid list so far, but what do you guys think thus far?
I don't have my IG book handy but I don't think you can use those doctrines on the storm troopers. I know for sure the sharpshooters because that only applies to a BS of 3 which they have a 4. The grenadier doctrine allows you to take up to three storm troopers squads instead of the impose 0-1 limitation. Now with the grenadiers, they aren't allowed to infiltrate or deepstrike. I am almost positive with the infiltrating but I could be wrong with the deepstrike though.
You will not be replacing your infantry though because the storm troopers would still be in your elite slots so you will still have to have 2 troop choices of normal IGs which they can take the other doctrines.
Where the heck did all them guardsmen come from?
Great Wolf! Is that the howl of the 13th?
I say go for it. I believe the only thing you can't combine with grenadiers is warrior weapons. although you can't use deep strike or infiltrate on them, you can just give them a chimera. this is probably a better option as it means more mobility. Also, you can still take storm troopers as elites as well, so you can infiltrate/ deepstrike those(you better model jump shoots on deep striking ones, or else(...)
esentually you could field 6 squads of storm troopers if you wanted(3 troops, 3 elites).
That is not dead which may eternal lie,
for in strange aeons even death may die.
Mackdawg is correct on a few points, but others were wrong.
Grenediers are storm troopers in everey way EXCEPT: they take 0-3 troop slots, and cannot deepstrike or infiltrate.
Thay also do not count as guard infantry, so they cannot be given doctrines, such as chem inhalers and hardend fighters.
Grenediers are great because of thei better armor and BS skill, but you will have less men in your army then your traditional infantry counterpart.

Grenadiers replaces troops. It lets you take 3 non DS or inf. Stormtroopers ast troop choices.
My upcoming blog in the works:
Yes, Stormies cannot take doctrines.
I like my Grenadier Squads in Chimeras. I kit 10 men with two Plasma Guns, a Vet Sgt with power weapon, and the Chimera has smoke, ea and Stubber.
Grenadiers are there in support of the tanks. They are not an 'up the gut' assault force. Let your big tanks do the work with the Grenadiers supporting when needed.
I love playing Grenadiers. It IS more challenging, but it is more mobile and fun to play if you are a 'Tread Head' like me!

Yep. He's correct. Grenadiers/storm troopers cannot take doctrines.Yes, Stormies cannot take doctrines.
I often take grenadiers and storm troopers. Sometimes i'll deepstrike them with meltas to take out enemy tanks (vet do perform this better, but i dont always take vets), but most often i'll run two smallish (6 to 8 man) squads, 1st squad in front with 2 meltas and a powersword, 2nd squad behind with 2 plasmaguns.
Seems to work ok.

Also, you should google "garfield minus garfield". Awesome.
hmmm, i beg to differ on that stormtroopers/grenadiers CAN take regimental doctrines. I called up the GW rule hot-line phonenumber and asked them about doctrines used on stormtroopers, they said yea, jus not drop troops on the grenadiers. Storm troopers do count as imperial units. So this could even mean, Ogryns ( which count as imperial untis) being given hardend fighters get a WS of 5 or whatever they have
Diggums I think has the best idea with mounting them in Chimeras since there's no d/s or infl, otherwise they'd get chewed up by heavy bolter fire, etc.
