Is it just me or are rough riders underpowered? I think for the increase of a point or 2, they should have the same tougness increase that bikes and jetbikes have. Toughness 4 would be nice. Logically, what is more powerfull? or human or a mounted human? obviously the mounted human will be harder to kill right?
I dunno about that. Maybe if the horse is wearing armour too - I mean, all you have to do is shoot the mount (which has large target written all over it), and the rough rider is now suddenly only a rough.
When people used swords, cavalry/heavy cavalry were quite effective - fast moving, and you had an extra reach to your weapon over the heads of the enemy forces, which was a devestating tool in hth. You could also use the horse to push your enemy back.
Bring a gun into the equation, and most their bonuses vanish. Being fast is about all they have left. Thats why cavalry has't really been used since world war 1, at about the same time that people stopped being promoted simpy because they were royalty or rich (about time too, it was a bloody stupid notion). That is, modern weapons forced smarter tactics to be neccessary on the battlefield, hence mounted cavalry pretty much vanished. Horses are fast, but they won't live long against massed assault rifles.
(Admittedly, cavalry were still effective in those days of single shot rifles, as their speed enabled them to get stuck in fast enough, but you could hardly call a boltgun an american civil war era relic).
Whereas, if a motorbike mounted warrior is hit, there's a strong chance it will be striking the bike itself, making the blow much less effective.
I could, however see some merit in a bonus in hth, I guess. They would be effective if they actually managed to reach the enemy, so if a change were to happen, perhaps they could get +1 toughness in hth. But I don't think they should get it against ranged attacks.
Just my highly opinioned uneducated rant for tonight. Now I'm off to make pancakes!
"Pickles, the drummer, doodily doo. (Ding-dong, doodily, doodily, doo.)"
Also, you should google "garfield minus garfield". Awesome.
If they were to be more effective, then they would have to cost more. For what they can do, they are a good value, IMO.
They aren't super effective, but they aren't super expensive either!
My big beef with R.R. is the models:x. I wish we had men on dirt bikes, mountain bikes or a different jet pack. I am just not a fan of horses.

well i don't like the horses either, i want my guys to ride giant wolves. not like giant giant but in that they are just big enough to ride compared to the usual one. hencewise i've been using the chaos warhound as my mounts and just green stuffing fur over the parts that show their skulls exposed from decay.
as for toughness 4, if you look somewhere on the creature feature on the uk site in chapter approved. the guardsmen do have a doctrine called 'xeno mounts' which is about 20 points for the squad (or your 2 per model in a squad of 10). it increases your armor save by +1. so regular +5 goes to +4, but a carapace doctrine combined with this gives you +3 armor save. it also has the bonus s4 hit from the mounts bite attack. i forget what else but their you go, not sure if there was a toughness increase but i doubt it, all for the loss of fleet of hoof.
i do like the idea of being able to include a megasaur as heavy support too (the lone guardsmen riding a dinosaur looked like it could be humorous) and the stats weren't half bad for a MC.
add in the ability to use take up to 4 warhounds as an armory item and you could feature all sorts of options in a kind of feral ig army, course those latter two options are available to all races but shrug if anybody ever uses them.
Don’t know about you guys buy I love the idea of an army full of horseback riders….and I do wish they made an army list for such an imperial force.
Imagine an army full of people mounted on him.
Tallest horse: Goliath slays world record
and it can work, its kind of easy to say that horses for IG are enhanced to make them tougher, faster, better million dollar horse add a few points and allow for more weapons to be choices for the rough riders.
and just look at the new Death riders of the Krieg….
Oh yes.... the Deathriders. Great models! Cant wait to paint them.... must resist tingling in fingers...
On the RoughRiders: GW made a couple of bummers when they made the choice. You have to give up a lot of stuff in order to get the lances and that simply isn't worth it. If the Rough Riders were given the same rules as the deathriders, they would be worth it. Furthermore, making the specialweapons and/or meltabombs a choice beside the lances - instead of replacements - the unit is suddenly much better.
But all in all, I think they are worth their points if they are used wisely.
For the models: they seriously need an update... but that will likely not happen anytime soon.
As to the models, my IG army (a bit down the road) will have a Tallarn-esque look to it, and I am absolutely salivating over the Mukaali Rough Riders from Forge World. Not like I'm wealthy enough to have a unit full of them, but just one (as a sergeant, perhaps) would look uber kewl, and make the "mounted horsemen" unit that much more worth it from a modeling/painting perspective.
I'm always wary of any idea that makes Imperial Guardsmen more powerful. Elite Imperial units are Marines (or Sisters of Battle) and we are talking a difference between distributing 3s and 4s in a stat line...
I'll agree though that they should be T3(4) due to the mount, just like eldar bikes, with no point difference. It would feel like a correction and no big benefit except to survive a little shooting. They'd still die horribly after the first round of melee and their lances would be used up anyway. Which is their job, after all.
As for models, my favorites are still converted Cold Ones. The FW Tallarn are waaaaaaay to big to properly hide in terrain.
I also like horses for the feral or primative world feel. Some guard regements from from low-tech worlds, after all. Fuedal even. That is the reason the ald Attilan RR models were... Attilan

RecklessFable's Journey to Mediocrity (Painting an IG army)
I've been addicted to World of Tanks lately and neglecting my IG... But it is so... much... fun!
Rough Riders are not underpowered at all! For around I believe 63 points you have 11!!!! S5 I5 Power weapon attacks with killer range!!. I use 2 squads of them (1,500pts+) for counter assaults mostly. Theres nothing better than wiping out a 400pt terminator command squad with a 60pt squad of IG in CC!! muahahahah Also if you wanna get really crazy you can give the vet sgt an honorifica imperialis and a power weapon to give em a little staying power. Plus they can take Carapace armor with requiring the rest of the army to take it. All in all they are one of my favorite Guard units!
