Welcome to Librarium Online!
Right now Im doing Imperial Guard, and I dont have too much. Everything I have but 1 model can be used in a Witch Hunters army.
I have a Leman Russ, an HQ, 2 infantry squads (1 Infantry Platoon), 4 Lascannons, an Autocannon and 10 Storm Troopers. If I take all the heavy weapons I can take all have 1 left over gun. So I think I want to turn it into a Witch Hunters army.
Why? My Guard is just too defensive. I want a shooting force and if what I read that Witch Hunters are good at close range shooting then that is what I want! I also really like the fluff and the models. So how can I begin converting my guard into Witch Hunters?
I know I first must get the Witch Hunters codex. Then where?
I really like the Battle Sisters, Inquistor model, Exorcist and the Penitent Engine. Im trying to get my army to 1000 points next. What are some cost ($) effective models to help get me there?
Also, anything else I should know about Witch Hunters before diving in or even before getting the codex? Anything I should look at and consider or just overall anything I should know before getting into Witch Hunters? Im doing Witch Hunters now because of the models, fluff, and the little I know from the play style and the fact I can use all my models!
Well if you're looking for anything to be $ effective you've come to the wrong army! =)
Before buying anything you need to decide how you're going to use your existing models.
1) Mod the shock troops a bit with some inquisitorial iconography, maybe beef up some of their guns with a little GS and so forth, and field them as storm troopers. This gives you a core of WH troop selections.
2) Buy a second infantry platoon. You can now use your existing infantry platoon and leman russ in your WH list once you have a core of WH.
3) Buy a pair of Chimeras for your guardsmen and turn the infantry platoon into two armored fist squads, and also continue using the leman russ.
Obviously there's no room for all the goodies in a 1,000 pt list
This is my 1,000 pt inducted guard list as an example. It does ok, but the all sisters version wins more games
Sisters of Battle Canoness, Jump Pack, 2+ Save, Eviscerator, book of st lucius
10 sisters of battle in a rhino with melta gun, flamer
10 sisters of battle in a rhino with flamer x2
10 guardsmen in a chimera with missile launcher and plasma gun
10 guardsmen in a chimera with autocannon and grenade launcher
Leman Russ with 3 heavy bolters
As you can see you have to really squeeze to do it in 1,000. If you want to do a 1,000 pt witch hunters force with more of the cool stuff like penitent engines you'll need to set aside the guard for bigger games.
I was thinking Id keep my guard on foot and fill up the infantry platoon with Lascannons. Along with the Rus. The stormtroopers having a Chimera.
Then just taking Battle Sisters as you have listed with the WH HQ of course and that would be the force. The Guardsmen and the Rus act as fire support laying down killer shots at targets I want done with the Sisters riding in for the attack. The stormtroopers would act as a reserve to defend the fire support or move in with the Sisters.
I know WH are not cheap, all the metal, niether is Guard with all the models! Yet I wasnt sure if there was a point expensive and money cheap model/box or whatever.
Eh, well, there isn't really a whole lot of selection in the miniature range. The one caution would be think twice about trying to save money by buying the boxed sets, especially if you're paying GW retail. The flamer+stormbolter combo isn't that useful, and the vet in the box has a plasma pistol + Eviscerator, which is not exactly a popular selection of gear for her. The same with the seraphim. The veteran in the seraphim box with bp+power weap isn't all that useful a model. Of course if you're buying at discount and have the time/inclination to do weapon swaps on metal minis, go to town!
Once again - WH are not cheap and you can't compare them to plastic IG unfortunately. And they are much harder to convert too...
Two IG squads will have two heavy weapons for "long range fire support" - hardly killer shots... at close range, you have 16 lasgun shots - also medicore (due to low stopping power)...
Two Armored Fists + Russ in around 500pts - half your 1000pts goal. With those 500pts you could get tooled up Canoness (120pts maybe) and two squads in Rhinos will cost you around 400pts - either you skimp on your HQ, or you give your Sisters almost no weapon upgrades... Getting IST (Kasrkin) as your two troop choices would save you points, yo uwould lose on the quality...
I guess what I am trying to say is that Wh are expensive any way you look at them, and that mixing IG with SOBs in 1000pts will not work. I would be not doing that in games smaller than 1500+pts (1750 or 2000 would be ideal).
Fluffy and fun, but in this case the mix of two nice armies would not create one killer list...
I fully agree with Smok
the point where IG induction starts to come into effectiveness for WH tends to be in the 1250+ range. really, It starts to do much better at 1500+
reason? you're really pinching points and reducing the effectiveness of all squads to fit all those units in. Esp. if you're trying to fit in 2 platoons to fulfill the troops requirements to get a Russ. Your points are much better spent in 1000pt games with fleshing out your WH force.
Your first 550 or so points will usually go to a Cannoness, and 2 units of Sisters with HFlamer, Melta, and Book of St. Lucius in a rhino with at least extra armor, and a jumpy cannoness with cloak of St. Aspria, Blessed Weapon, Frags, and BoltPistol.
From there, I look at supporting those 3 basic building blocks. 2 Exorcists are dandy for that. Why 2? and not 1? I've found that Exorcists work far better in tandem. If the first Exo should miss the anti-tank monstrosity it's firing at, you'll be very glad you have a second chance at it. Exorcists are small enough to be able to use terrain to deny Los and still be effective. If someone DOES happen to pop one of them, you've still got 1 to return fire with, and kill the offender.
other options I'm quite fond of:
I prefer the twin Inferno Pistol variants. I like to be able to Kill armor. Especially when I run up against 6 or so Ven Dreads. If I'm running Seraphim with Inf. Pistols, I usually switch the mounted squads from Melta to a Flamer.
For a firebase, not much better you can do than a DH =I= with a psycannon, 2 sages, 2HB servitors, and a Plas Cannon Servitor. that's a lot of Dakka. If you want a more surviveable unit. WH =I= with the same retinue, but add a chiurgeon and an acolyte is nice also. DH Elite Inquisitors with Psycannons are nice IC's also. Another added benefit to your heavy firebase being in the Elite or HQ slot, is the order of placement. your opponent should have a lot of his heavy and troops down, so you can set up these squads to be rather effective.
for 1000pts, that's going to be most of what you could do. not a lot of options. Even up to 1500pts, a 1000pt WH base is a solid place to start. For Tourneys, I like running with:
2 SoB squads with HFlamer/flamer
Seraphim w/inferno pistols (or shooty =I=)
2 Armored Fists with Multilaser/Hbolter chimera, and Autocannon in squad.
1 Leman Russ
Part of the trick with WH is the running of a light armor company. WH don't get real heavy armor. The more armor on the board, the better. Armored Fists provide a very nice medium tank and a long range shot. Platoons give more bodies at a higher cost.
you might find you prefer the platoon approach. for me, give me dual armored fists, and a sentinel for thte price of the platoon, I'll be happy.
Thanks for the info. For now it looks like its best to not mix. All be just saving up money and looking out for other options or deals on WH.
