I was thinking of putting my grandmaster and his 7 terminator retinue into a land raider crusader. The land raider crusader seems ideal for transporting my terminators because of it firepower, armor, and troop capacity. one thing thats bothering me is its cost, at 255 pts. Can it easily get its points back or am I better off just getting a chimera.
You won't be able to transport your HQ in a Chim (It can only be purchased as a troop transport for a certain squad and that having been said it can only be chosen for STs or Inducted IGs in a DH army) so its a moot point in that regard Its the LR or the LRC or DSing for them.
It is a good choice in a larger game as you can beat the armour and mobility it provides, so i'd say go for it. But in a game under 1500 points it becomes useless as you cannot take it realistically.
I agree with Elandili in that larger games definitely warrant the use of a Land Raider. , it is a unit in and of itself, so you can drop off your Hq, and then pick up some other unit. If I'm fighting an army with a ton of troops, I like to put my HQ in the Crusader and whittle 'em down a bit before assaulting.
In a larger game I perfer the LR due to the tank killing ability. Knowing that my oppenant will likely deploy some type of armor. The LCR is great and I have used it in the past but found that against armor, it is difficult to use.
I have yet to feild my Landraider (just as I have yet to feild my space marines for a fourth time, I just can't put my sisters down), but I really like the landraider. You pay up the nose for it, but if its used properly, you can do a lot of damage with one.
One thing about the Chimera, though. Since Inquisitors (HQ and Elite) are Independent characters, you can forsake the Henchmen and have hime join a unit of Stormtroopers. This way, he can ride in a Chimera, provided there is enough room and he's not wearing Terminator Armor.
The lack of tank-killing power in the deamonhunter guns is a problem so a normal LR is a great purchase for pure Deamonhunters armies over 1500 pts. Personally I prefer to induct some guard and give them some heavy weapons.
A Rhino? SLOTH!
All in all, I think they're tanks, not transports. Tanks that serve different purposes. Deepstriking is our transport. If you need transports, go with Chims or Rhinos, they're cheaper and compliment LRs nicely. And you won't cringe when you move fully and can't shoot.
If you need effective anti-armor, induct a Leman Russ and either 2 Armored Fists or 2 infantry platoons. Gives you a lot more flexability and hell of a lot more heavy weapons.
I like the crusader its nice for big point battles but in smaller battles it wastes way too many points
When cities burn and armies turn
and flee in disarray,
Cowards will cry 'tis best to fly
and fight another day,
But warriors know it in their marrow when they
die and fall,
It is better to have fought and lost than not have
fought at all.

the knower of werty!
the master of the obvious!
