I've been hearing some things about the weapons choices and how, combined right can make marines strong, so I think that a thread would be a cool way to pool thoughts on this subject.
With an Auspex: HB & Plas. The latter has the one high-strength shot to the filtrators, and the HB has a nice load of shots to force some savews, and not to mention the 8 bolters.
As an assault force: Meltagun. Guess why.
Post your army lists in the ARMY LIST section! Not that hard!
as toon says, (and as usual with poll) the question is naff, there is no optimal weapons fit for a tac squad, because there are too many varriables:
how you use your tac squad
what else is in your army
what the mission is
what the terrain is like
what army your opponent uses
how he deploys
what is the overall makeup of your opponents forces
now arguably this could be countered by saying the quesion is generalised, the problem is that point it becomes so dilutes it is entirely meaningless
Everything you have been told is a lie!
It sounds more like he's asking for good combos, than he's asking for the "all powerful" great at everything tac squad.... anyways--
I'd say that the melta gun + powerfist (can we use those?) combo is best for an assault squad, and the lascannon/plasma gun for a static shooty tac squad (though, I kill myself with plasma more times than I would like-- warning)...
@ original poster--- Do you want to know why? :shifty:
Oh yeah, and Hi! I'm new...
I've been thinking about doing a multimelta and melta combo with my assaulty blood angels. Run the tact squad up in a rhino - jump out smoke launch and shoot anything within 12. My assault squads are close behind (they also have a meltagun). I don't like the plasma cause they always blow up, and I figure if I can get close, the melta weapons are twice as effective. The only thing I'm a little worried about is eldar or tau skimmer armies (but I'm sure I'll have plenty of other things to shoot at if they are hiding)
Anyway, this tact squad gives me the ability to provide fire support for my assault squads and draws fire from them as well as can take down vehicles if needed.
what do you think?
I'd say that the optimal option for a supporting fire squad is probably the ever present Las/Plas squad, with a lascannon for long range work AT and a plasma gun for up close killing of light vehicles and high save troops.
I do have a soft spot for the cheap and chearful firebase squad, with a Heavy Bolter and a Meltagun. The HB is cheap enough in a tac squad that it's alright to move it about without loosing all that much. You can move up to a spot you like the look of and then hold it with the added firepower and the meltagun to keep any armour away from you. With traits like "Trust Your Battle Brothers" they can be a nasty little unit to try and drive out.
Best bet for close combat tactical squads, those with 8 or 10 marines, with a veteran sergeant, is a melta gun. Mostly because you can shoot and charge with it.
Personally, I hate las/plas squads, they never do well for me. Single Lascannon squads with just 5 marines do pretty well however. For whatever reason, opponent tend to shoot my las/plas squads a lot, and nearly ignore my single lascannon squad.
Meltagun, and thats it, I have never bothered with Heavy weapons in tactical squads, whats the point when you move EVERY turn with them
I love the humble ten men squad with a missile launcher.
Great for defence, doesn't lost much hitting power when moving on the offensive, can take out any enemy, it is good. And cheap.
