I've just recently bought the Space Marine Codex, and I've been flippin' through it. At the same time, on of my friends got Codex: Tau.
So, we're building our armies at more or less the same rate.
I've never liked assault heavy armies too much, but that's the Tau's most major weakness.
So, I've been considering doing either Blood Angels, or doing a 'nilla.
If a tree falls in the forest, and it lands on a mime, does anyone care?
go with plain marines (personally I'd recommend ultramarines cuz they are very in depth and you can e-bay an old codex with lots of good chapter info / history and pictures......plus they obviously look the coolest).......The reason you should go with plain marines is simple. It gives you options.......you can still build an excellent assault force and take out the Tau, or you can build a sit / relax / shoot force if you ever play against a different opponent.
i agree collect vanilla, if you want paint them in blood angel like colours that way if you decide to go with ba after all they can always be converted to a successor chapter using ba rules  also a vanilla chapter will allow you to balance your army to accomadate you style more
