Ok I can understand putting tactical squads in your tournament armies cuz they are versatile, but if you're playing a specific scenario or against a certain army, do you guys find tac squads useful? I know you need troop choices, but why not some cheap scouts?
Or is it considered cheesy to have an assualt or shooty oriented army?
First, no its not considered cheesy to have a shooty or cc oriented army.
Second you have to be nuts to not have tac squads, IMO. Im my BT army I have 3 cc oriented ones and 3 shooty ones. They are the backbone of my army, I can't have scout squads so I don't know if they are worth it or not. I usually don't even stick a neophte in any of them.

I'd say they are the backbone of most Space Marine armies. They are very versatile. They can be a small squad with a heavy and special weapon, large squad, with or without a heavy weapon, on foot or mounted, Rhino or Razorback. Very good all around units.
Scouts are cheaper, but I'd rather pay a couple of points for the better armor myself.
How can you have a SM army without tac squads ..that's like going into battle with a gun that's missing the trigger.."it's ok I'll just throw the bullets at you!" yeah go ahead and send your expensive elite units out into the battle with no cannon fodder tac squads to support them or absorb the fire and see how long they last
I jsut realised i finnaly reached Marine..w00t!
A few things:
This post was a devils advocate oriented one, I'm glad it's sparked some interest
I have 5 tac squads, so I've used them before, but not all the time
BT tac squads are not the same as nilla tac squads, I have a BT army myself the fact that you can arm them with HtH weapons makes them more of specialized unit than a nilla tac squad. Not to mention that you can use their armor values to shield your neophytes if you have a lot of ground to cover. I can understand using a small tac squad to shield your lascannon or other heavy weapon by taking a few hits for you.
I have a BA army as well, and for me, I can't see why I would have a squad of regular bolter marines running across the table or in a Rhino when I can just use an assault squad or terminator squad and deep strike (if the option permits itself) And I will be putting my DC in a rhino anyways... For my army its all about getting into hand to hand as soon as possible and scouts are better able for the price IMO
I personally like scouts, I think they're a good bargain considering that they can infiltrate and have the option of using sniper rifles to take down tougher opponents like bikers
I suppose if I played a more shooty army, tac squads would be more appealing, but I also think a 10 man devastator squad would do the job just fine if not better. 6 cannon fodder guys, and 4 hvy weapons, mmmm plenty to fry up some tyranids for dinner. And that fact that if you were playing tyranids and they have fleet of claw, you're not going to get a chance to rapid fire your bolter anyways...
Just a few thoughts I had, keep the posts coming! haha, have a good one guys
I play BA too..most of the time i use meh tac squads as meat shields or as a distraction untill i can get meh Death company in and start rippin' things apart..and tac squads are more effective meath sheilds then souts 'cause they're a bit tougher and last longer
I love Tac Squads, you can't live without 'em
I play DA, so ==Mine== are primarily the anchor of ==My== firing lines, but who's to say a Vet Sergeant w/ a powerfist or power weapon can't sneak in for some fun :w
Check out ==My== blog: www.bnhblog.blogspot.com
i play raven guard aka nilla and i cant go into battl without em though i use hand to hand assalt squads alot (i just love hand to hand) i just have to bring somr tactival squads.
I adopted a cute lil' superman fetus
from Fetusmart! Hooray fetus! </a>
As an Ultramarine player I've used them in several different ways.......
I have seven 10 man squads and versitility is the game here. I've used them as a slow moving wall of hot lead protecting my Devastators and HQ's. Tossed them in rhinos to reach my oppt's back line quickly or grab table quarters. Use them to tie up oppt's in HTH while you manuver elites/HQ's or other hard hitters into postition.

Blood angels tend to favor scout squads because they are equipped with close combat weapons. Witch in my opinion the blood angels should get to arm all there tactical marines with close combat weapons. Too many new armies are allowed to substitute their bolters for close combat weapons.
Also a Blood angel’s player fielding mostly assault and terminators would feel more of a bight when two or more of them get sucked into the death company. That was always one of the reasons I stayed away from the expensive elite units in preference for more grunts.
As far as any other marine army is concerned, I think they should all take a nice bulk of their army as tactical marines, there is nothing you cant have them do.
