I have four of the "old school" metal sniper scout models. I want to put a unit of scout snipers in my DIY chapter army, but I'm not sure what else to put with them. I'd really like to buy the plastic box set, if for no other reason than to have extra bits to play with, but since I can't find anyone who wants to trade/buy the metal ones off me, I'm kinda stuck.
My question: is it worth it to buy the box set too, and therefore have more than 4 snipers in one squad, or is that overkill? Should I have 4-5 "regular" scouts in a unit with 4-5 snipers, or keep the group small? I know the answer varies from army to army, but I'm asking what the generally-accepted wisdom dictates.
If you're looking to fill this squad out with a sergeant or another sniper then I recommend ordring the bits and forget buying a scout squad.

Hope that helps.

If your worried about having too many snipers, don't be, I used to have 20 of them in my DA force in the old days hehe, and if you can get metal ones, do so, the plastics are far worse than the old ones, they look horrendous, but if your desperate do so.
A squad of 9 snipers wouldn't be useless but your taking a lot of points and they really wouldn't be viable in a small point game. Also you need to take into account that your scouts now cost even more then assault marines!
If you still want to get rid of them why not paint them up and sell them on E bay as "Pro painted models for sale" Maybe you could even make some money to put towards your plastic scout squad. My fee is 10%, na your a friend so this ones on me

FF7: ABOUT RANDOM BATTLES
I would play the 4 sniper scouts and buy a missle launcher scout to put in the unit. The missle launcher will act just like a sniper rifle in most cases, but also can get you out of a bind sometime if your other anti armor gets taken out early in the game. Then only real drawback is that then your sniper scouts which are pretty spendy become more of a primary target for reletively easy victory points.
well I would say don't bother with them! I have 5 myself. although I'm not too sure that I'll ever use them under the new DA rulz, considering that they're elites now! I mean scouts as elites! come on, their friggin neophites, not even full marines! and they want to class them with termies, dreds, vets. on the other hand you can have up to 9 in a sq. BFD! because as was already stated that they become a target that are relentlessly persecuted! besides marines are in your face fighters, not the hidy type! but seriously if your thinking about getting them, do it, fill out the squad, it's always nice to have the options. furthermore if you do get more put a heavy weapon in you will need it.
You can't use the Scout bits for a whole lot of good, I'm afraid. They're very difficult to mod with.
Five should be enough for whatever you intend. I wouldn't spend the money.

For a DIY chapter, I think a good configuration for your 4 snipers is add either a ML, if you want extra armor control or a HB for extra infantry control.
For the new DA or BA chapters, I wouldn't use scouts.
First, are you aware that scouts, especially when fielded as *elites, are typically a waste of points?
Space marines far out preform them. First, a bolter is typically better against opponents with low armor saves. Neither are very effective against high armor save opponents. Bolters often get more shots however.
The only way sniper rifles are good, is when they are bought against high toughness models, like wraith lords, or TMC.
To be effective, snipers typically work in squads of 8, 7 sniper rifles, and 1 missile launcher. The Missile launcher is well suited to take on high toughness models, although a lascannon would be ideal. Compared to the heavy bolter which is nearly useless in a scout squad.
7 Sniper rifle shots should score 6 hits, which deals 3 wounds, against power armor with normally results in a wound. And the missile launcher might take on another. Thats about the only way scouts are effective.
But thats a very small window of usefulness so unless your play MC heavy lists, i wouldn't use them at all.
Where as, a devastator squad of 4 MLs can take on a huge array of opponents, is more durable then scouts, and the best part, they cost only 50 more points. Finally traits can allow them to be infiltrated if your playing the normal codex.
*Yes, Yes space wolves players, your scouts are the best in the game, and should almost always be fielded.
EDIT: Also don't mix bolters with snipers, as they share almost no targets which they are both effective against.
