Recently I started playing Black Templars army(I'm experienced Imperial Guard player).
My usual opponent is Eldar player who started a jetbike army just a few days ago and I'm having a lot of trouble with them. The jetbikes just move barely into range of my foot sloggers and try to nail the marines with shuriken catapult/cannon fire. Most of the time it's quite ineffective, but I cannot reach them, because they flee 6" in the assault phase. Even with the vow "Abhor the witch", Righteous Zeal and crusader seals I cannot get into assault range. The next major problem are the power weapon equipped shining spears and their withdraw ability. They use the tactic of the jetbikes - hit and retreat - but also assault my isolated squads and leave them at 2 or 3 members.
I tried to add some ranged power - speeders and a dreadnought, but they are not effective and get destroyed by jetbike far seer and/or a fire prism.
Any advice is appreciated. I only want to know what to use against jetbikes.
Try Building up a ton of fire power, seting up in a good fire lane, setting up your entire army together so there aren't any isolated units, and staying put (as much as you can manage with those zellots). He's on bikes so he'll come to you. His modles are going to be expensive as well so you get the rare chance of outnumbering someone with a marines army. Wait till he's within heavy weapon range and unload. Getting nail every turn by the fire prism is going to suck, but you might just have to sit there and take it.
You could also switch back to IG and really unleash a lot of fire power.
Well, with IG I have no problems - the face he made when I told him how many heavy weapons I had in 600pts game was funny (though most games we play IG vs Eldar come out draw. Current record 2/4/1 against him); but I want to beat this with Black Templars alone. I used a dreadnought and two speeders to some success, but it's not very promising - the blade storm of shuriken fire just nails even power armor. The main problem appears to be that I cannot get into HtH. Maybe some deepstrikers would help?
I somehow dislike the static firepower - BT are just not meant for ranged combat, although I try to use proper fire support.
Well... Static fire power can be boring. I agree with you on that. Maybe put your guys in transports and chase him down. Just make sure to keep your army together so he can't pick off isolated units. Maybe even move along a table edge so he can only engage you from one direction.
That's when you start missing devastators.
Anyway, I got two ideas.
1. Get bikers. Answer speed with speed in power armour. In principle those jetbikes are faster but if they want to fire their shuriken catapults they have to get close enough for the bikers to either assault them, or to rapid-fire their bolters into them. That will hurt.
2. Get a Predator Destructor. It's harder to destroy than a dreadnought and packs more firepower. And those jetbikes can't outrun their fire. An alternative idea would be a squad with bolters, plasmagun and a heavy bolter mounted in a heavy bolter-equipped Razorback. Weaker vehicle but with troops that can fight on if it's destroyed.
Well for 1
Black Templars are "teh sukk" at static firing power...
2nd, black templars will have to rely on assault weaponry in order to opperate effectively.
I suggest a Semi-mechanized approach with perhaps a crusader.
Destructor is a must. even if it only gets 1-2 turns of shooting off...The fact that the enemy will divert their firepower AWAY from your troops is a GREAT thing.
Your goal is going to be..wittle his CC specialists down before you fight them.....And then eliminate his other threats....
I like the bike idea. I'll try some of these attack bikes. I am still not sure if they will ever get into CC, because of that eldar jetbike special rule, but the ranged firepower seems pretty good.
His CC specialists are not so much of a problem(except Harlequins) with their S3 attacks, although quite a few of them are power weapon attacks. They are first in initiative, but once my turn comes they turn into red paste.
Won't a predator annihilator be better choice? With it's lascannns he'll pack strong AT punch, and one of my main goals is to keep that fire prism shaken all the time, and I cannot see how that will happen with a destructor.
If you're having troubles with an Eldar jetbike army, the Tau would be your worst nightmare. Around half of their choices have the Jump Shoot Jump (JSJ) rule.
Bikers are going to be your best bet. Assault like Templars, but very quick and with decent anti-tank abilities.
I would recommend lots of bikers screening for a larger force of rhino equipped squads. A tank hunter dread would be nice against mobile enemy armor, maybe take 2 or give it a drop pod.
Turtles For the Turtle God!
Shells For the Shell Throne!
try two crusaders... or punch your oponent with something really heavy:shifty:
"Guarantee the safety and assurance of any citizen of the Imperium of Mankind,
wherever he or she travels or sets foot within the lenght and breadth of the Imperium."
Ave Imperator Semper Fidelis!
sure you only need 3's to wound them..but they get a 50% chance of NOT DYING...
However their weapon skill combined with # of attacks, with the 90% chance of THEM getting the charge on you..your squad will dwindle quickly.
Second..predator annihilator Vs Eldar is asking to lose out on a tank..
A Pred ani will be able to fire 1 weapon (TLLC) while moving unless you fit it with heavy bolters.
However a Destructor will pack 8 AP4 shots per turn, none of which needing more than a 2 to wound. and be 100% mobile....And save you more points than an anhilator..
Killing Eldar vehicles isn't a matter of high strength weapons..it's a matter of rolling good..
Damn near anything has a CHANCE of hurting the vehicles..it's just no one can roll 3 sixes....
Everything on a destructor has the potential of taking out ANYTHING the eldar can field, if you roll well enough. From Guardian, to avatar, to fireprizm.
Keeping the prizm shaken all the time should be the LAST priority of your destructor/anihilator..Whatever you're fielding..
A Fireprizm will probably be the cheapest thing he has on the field...and you're wasting an entire round of shooting from a Eldar killing tank..on keeping his vehicle "stunned"...
If he's targeting infantry with his prizm..let him..You target infantry too..
Him shooting at your infantry will only mean you get into combat alot sooner..
Do NOT forget the black templar rule as it will help you in a big way...
Now don't let him lead your men around with his jetbikes either, because if he's good he will do that..he'll shoot at you with just enough to make your guys run towards something for no reason. Kill his mobility before you worry about his "firepower"..you've got power armor, utilize it.
remember, a BT armies strength is also it's weakness...
Load up squads so they CAN take casualties....then move em foreward till they can fight and fire their weapons..
Remember kit them with Fist/Melta every time...
Melta can run and gun..and fist can knock em dead...
A Crusader would be nice...but that's alot of points to lose on turn 1..which will happen. Lol
I say 1 preds and a vindicator....Vindicator can force his squads to move away from it....1 pred can deal with your "scary fireprizm" and can dominate his infantry.
