I'm planning on building my currently 500 point space wolf army to the "oh-so-mighty" 750 points. I have given it some thought but I can't seem to decide on what I want. I'd like to base my army on Scouts and Blood Claws. Scouts because they're cool and have OBEL, Blood Claws because I like the amount of power fists they can take and the berserk charge.
So, I don't know what to buy...
My current list:
Bolt pistol and frosty axe - 101
plasma pistol, power weapon, meltagun - 90
true gritted, power fist - 123
Rhino, 2 power fists - 186
I was thinking about using bikes, or more squads of Scouts, or Blood Claws with jump packs. I am thinking about these because I need more mobility in my list. perhaps I could get a rhino for my Grey Hunters if I need to...
I don't want to use Long Fangs, just 'cause I don't feel like using devastator squads. And I don't really think I should get another squad of Grey Hunters. Fluff wise, I'm I have many young pups and many skilled wolves. However this army is not as old as others, so there's no Long Fangs. Also I plan on straying from termie armour.
What do you guys think? What should I get?
Another squad of Blood Claws, to put more Rhinos on the table. Rhinos work best when used en masse, so your enemy has too many of them to shoot. Also, it seems like that's where your army fluff is pointing to.

Grey Hunters are a solid unit so adding some more of them would prove useful, but you already have a pack of them so you might as well go with more Blood Claws, especially if you like them better. You could also throw in a tank or drednought for armored support.
It sounds, to me, like swarming the place with blood claws will be your best bet and you can use the leftover points to get yourself a transport for the grey hunters of an attack bike or something.
As much fun as more foot claws be, I looked at the bikes, I have exactly 250 points here, I like using the points that I have alloted to me. I just wish I could get another melta in there...
2 power fists, flamer
2 Attack bikes
2 multi meltas
I like this because this adds more tank busting ability and speed. I also like how I can use a lot of power fists with blood claws.
Would this be good?
Or should I try to duplicate some of my other squads? Remember if I have 500 points, I want to use them, if I have 750, I'll use 750. I don't go over just to be fair, even in friendly games.
I would add a rhino and bikes to make the list look something like this:
Rune Priest - BP+frost, Wolf Pelt
Scouts (4) - Meltagun, Plasma Pistol
Grey Hunters (6) - PFx1, Rhino
Blood Claws ( - PFx2, Meltagun, Rhino
Blood Claws Bikes (6) - PFx2, Meltagun
It's a good model count with mobility and lots of fists, just what the doctor ordered.
In my experience a squad of three bikes is not big enough to handle the job, the pack outlined above can zip around taking out tanks as well as handling almost anything that you'll find in a 750 point list in close combat.
Ok first off, for your scouts remove the plasma pistol and add a power weapon, for a 4 man squad of scouts with 1 meltagun and a power weapon runs about 76 points in that range. I run this unit and in my last game it took out a 200 something point chaos predator, and 2 six man squads before falling to heavy bolter fire. BUT REMEMBER ONLY ONE UNIT OF SCOUTS CAN OBEL SO ONLY TAKE ONE melta bombs could be optional if you want.
I would suggest drop pods, they are cheaper transports and you can max out your squads, then throw in your Rune Priest in the GH squad add a couple of melta guns to the squads, and there you go, a fast drop assualt army with a inv. save when the RP comes down.
Blood Claw bikes are worthless they have a basic WS and for 30+ points, you could get 2 regular blood claws. IMHO take more GH or BC in pods it will work alot better.
Erik Moraki's Great Company 16/4/7
Borgut "SBD" GreatStrider's Ogres 6/1/2
An'Gorath's World Eaters 3/0/2
Sigurd GreatFang's Wulfen Host 7/4/3
Regular blood claws do not move up to 24" per turn nor do they have a toughness of five and a 3+ invulnerable save. There are situations where two blood claws are a better buy than a biker, but bikers certainly are not worthless. In a list where you are laking a shooty element they can fill that role by moving across the board very quickly to get into melta range.Blood Claw bikes are worthless they have a basic WS and for 30+ points, you could get 2 regular blood claws. IMHO take more GH or BC in pods it will work alot better.
Drop pods are fun to play and can be spectacularly effective. However in a list as small as 750 points they are a very big gamble. When you only have two to three troop choices it only takes one drop pod to miss a few rolls and not come in until turn five or six to ruin your day. I tend to reserve drop pod lists for large games where one or two late pods won't hurt quite so badly.
As for the scout squad I typically favor plasma pistols over power weapons. In my experience I have found that they come under heavy fire very quickly and I seldom have time to move mine into close combat before their 4+ save is ripped apart. The plasma pistol gives me a chance at returning some of this fire as well as a backup to the meltagun against rear armor, which is their primary target.
What do you mean? They're on bikes, so they should be able to turbo boost. And they do have toughness 5. After all They are marines on bikes, not scouts.
Well I've sketched my list around, I did this especially after I remembered that I wanted to get the extra armor on the rhino by 750 points.
Bolt pistol, frosty axe - 101
4x Wolf Scouts
Melta, power weapon - 80
6x Grey Hunters
All true gritted, power fist - 123
8x Blood Claws
2 Power fists
X-armor, (Iho's) - 194
3x Blood Claw Bikers
2 Power fists, melta - 122
2x Attack Bikes (1 squad)
2 Multi-meltas - 130
Total: exactly 750
I like it, lots of microwaving goodness for tanks. (Don't put metal in the microwave... Bad things happen...) I feel that this list will be quite competitive and will fulfill my desire for the fluffy way the army's built.
Any comments? Do you like it? I'm working on getting the bikes and one more attack bike, then I just need to get a regular wolf scout and I'll be in business!
