Project Excelsior
Joseph Kittinger

TL,DR: In the 1960's a guy takes a balloon ride to the edge of space, jumps out, breaks the sound barrier and record for the longest freefall before landing safely. He does this a total of THREE times when normal men would be shitting piss, before going on to fly three tours in the vietnam war, shot down, made prisoner, came back home and then goes on to compete in high altitude ballooning well into the nineties.

Incredibly cliche for a poignant picture thread, but it's probably my favourite photograph in existence:

I was expecting the Iwo Jima picture to appear somewhere in the thread. For me, the Tiananmen Square picture is the most thought provoking, and I would have posted that if I hadn't been beaten to it.

So for me, it has to be this guy, Winston Churchill:

or this guy, Charles Babbage:

For me, this one of Ulysses S. Grant is one of my favorites. Its a perfect portrait of the man, the war, and of America. For some reason, Grant reminds me both of Mal Reynolds and Han Solo. Anyways, damn cool.
